I've been looking at all the programers that are avalible for 03-04 HPCR trucks, such as B-D performance diesel's (not Bully Dog) X-programer. I wonder if they add pressure if any, and how you guys that are running it like it compared to the modules. It won't be long berfore my warranty is out, and been doing lot's of research on all the different power enhancers that everyone runs. Just doing my home work to find out what might work best for me in the long run for the way I drive

B-D has the X-programmer and the X-tuner. One adds pressure only. One adds timing and duration only. If you go to the website it should tell all.

I'm running a Diablosport now stacked with Quads XZT box. I have no experience with B-D, but have heard good things.

Thanks Amassaro, Yea went to their web site and couldn't find any detailed info on the programer, but they do say that the X-power plus has no pressure.

I've heard that it's really the Van akken just relabled

Call B-d and they will tell all. The guys at BD are top notch. If I knew, I'd tell ya, but I just don't and don't want to give out bad info.

one can usually tell what a box does by looking at the way it hooks up. if it hooks into the rail pressure sender then it does pressure fooling and raises rail pressure. TDR issue 48 covers a set of power enhancing modules; issue 53 will cover the Juice, Quadzilla, and the ATS downloader.

The bullydog downloader does mild pressure. the ATS downloader does not do any pressure, from my tests. At least thats the latest info/data I have.

In testing 10-15 different products, In can tell you there is a wide variety in terms of drivability. -Doug

The way it's looking, I'm leaning more towards a duration type box. Such as a TST PMCR, a Van aaken 3. 2, or the BD-Ram power-X plus. just can't decide. I guess I've read to much info to make a final decission :D . The part that has me concerned is everyday reliability, and longivity such as over pressuring the system beyond it limits, and wear and tear on the injectors and other vitol parts the boxes that add pressure, thats my main concern. Like what was said in TDR Issue 48, " Consider that, at 13 horsepower per 1,000 psi, a pressure box making 90 horsepower at the rear wheels would require over 30,000 psi in the rail ". I don't like the sound of that

Well, the point of that statement was really two-fold. We know that 90 horsepower is easily obtained via pressure fooling but:

1. I highly doubt that 30,000 psi is even possible in the rail

2. therefore the ECM is probably at work making additional power beyond what pure rail pressure increase could provide.

For the pressure conservative, stay below 60HP or so with pressure. Just my opinion, but I believe there is enough margin in the rail to support that. What the real agressive pressure boxes do is run (cruise) at 20,000+ instead of 12,000 psi. so its not (in my opinion) so much about maximum rail pressure (which occurs at peak power WOT) but the wear-and-tear on the injectors due to a substantial increase during cruise.

Just make sure that the duration box you choose also performs timing. TST is a good choice in that regard. I have not tested the BD. Just remember that duration without a corresponding timing advance gives very high EGTs. The nice thing about the mild pressure boxes is that they are simple, and run cool. Personally, although the C3. 2 is a very nice box, well built, and drives exceptionally well, it uses duration without timing and runs very hot.

Thanks DLeno

Yeah, I remember somthing in other posts about the 3. 2 VA box not adding timing, but would be compromised with the use of a Rokk Tek sensor. I wonder how that would work for me being that I've alreadygot the sensor installed. My trucks only rated from the factory at 250 HP, but with the Rokk Tek, I've adjusted the timing up and down and found somwhere in the middle where it performs better there than all the way. Right now what I have, is alot better than stock, but not no kick in the pants like I need when I go to pass above passing gear to get around someone #@$%! man I hate it. I think an extra 50 horses would do it, I think

Doug nice to see you around!!!

Didn't you suggest that there was better boxes for different years?

Emerald5. 9,

Do you tow? If so I would suggest a small pressure box (50hp edge) as DLeno said, it's not that much pressure. The duration box will add heat and if you tow this could be an issue if you dont have free flow muffler.

Thanks JRG I've havent had much time to browse the forums; good to get back in touch with you guys.

Sure there will be some differences among boxes for the various model years; the 04. 5 600 engine is quite a different animal from the electronics standpoint. Still, however, the basic functions of timing, duration, and pressure, all apply, even though some tricks have to be played that may not be requried on the 03-04 platform (pressure fooling comes to mind -- it has to be done a bit differently on the 600, but most mfgs have figured that out and are happily making substantial power with pressure boxes)

the moderate pressure box for towing is a very nice way to go. simple, cost-effective, easy to instal, etc. Just don't let anyone tell you that a pressure box "does timing". We did have a short-lived exception to this rule in the Quadzilla line - they were able to coax a small amount of timing out of the CAN bus, but access to that interface has since disapeared in the 06 trucks. So those with the old 'zilla boxes with CAN bus connections can smile knowing that some small amount of timing is happening.

Any of the pressure boxes on their low settings are quite nice in my opinion.

I would strongly recommend asking retailers if they will let you try one first. Even if you have to pay for it and get reimbursed less shipping or something like that. There are differences in drivability from box to box -- you might like jumpy and aggressive and someone else might like smooth. And you can throw on a rail pressure gauge to see what the box is actually doing!

speaking of which -- we just went into production on the gauge for rail pressure. I'm told that means about 2 more months.
