Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) power steering over full ???

Hi my brothers truck has a bad leak on the drivers side it looks like motor oil is getting into the steering pump and it is overfilling the pump has any one had this problem if so do we need to replace some seals thanks James

You need to include some info on your truck to help get more accurate answers.

On my 98 12V I had the seal fail between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump (common drive). The seal is somewhat hidden but I have replaced mine twice over a 7 year period (about 70,000m on each of them).

The seal cost about $4. 70 and takes about 1. 5 hours to exchange.



I would suggest a thorough cleaning of the area with engine cleaner, let it dry and then start and watch from below at the connection between the vac. pump and the pwr steering pump to verify the source.

yeah sounds like the seal is leaking between vacuum pump and p/s pump

No way it can overfill the ps pump.

Maybe my bad, but isn't that an exposed coupling? You can tell, I have never had mine off. I thought a vacuum pump seal leak could only go to the atmosphere.

Just looked at mine, and guess it could be possible. It would have to overide the ps pressure and get past the seal, looks like to me. Would like to know what you find out.

The vacuum pump is cooled off with oil from the engine. There is no motor oil introduced into the power steering pump.

The oil seal in the vacuum pump is known to go(leak).

I really doubt it. When the vac pump seal wears the oil drips from between the two pumps. More than likely the steering pump puked it's contents. Did you check the level?

this is the only place p/s and oil meet, I have seen some crazy stuff before, so I wouldn't rule out the stupid stuff.

Ok this is what we found the seal in the back of the vac pump was bad and the powersteering pump is almost a press fit into the vac pump it looks like the oil was going past the vac pump seal and pushing its way into the seal on the power steering we replaced both and the powersteering level is staying the same i hope this helps other with the same problem

oil is under pressure, p/s resevoir isn't

My sons truck 92 is haveing the same problem the oil is overflowing the resivor on the powersteering pump. did you just replace seals or the pump? thanks Mike

I do not believe that the 92 is the same setup as the 04's to 08's so it might be seals but it could be something else... . let us know!
