Hello all. Looks like the power steering pump is leaking from underneath the unit. Is there a weep hole there? Or just a seal? How bad is it to replace the pump? I know Genos sells a rebuild kit for it. Anyone try it?
I just replaced mine a month ago when I was doing the vacuum pump seal that was leaking. If I recall there are the two lines on the back and then there must be some sort of front seal where the shaft comes out where it couples with the vacuum pump. You will need a new vacuum pump seal if you take the steering pump out. I replaced the pump from napa I am thinking it was in the 70 range maybe less so I cant tell you about the rebuild kit. In any case it may not be the steering pump. The vacuum pump seal leaking is fairly common. You probably already have but just make sure it is ps fluid leaking and not oil.
Its definately PS fluid. There was a small puddle under the truck this morning and I had no power brakes or power steering. Fluid was a little low, but still ok. Restarted truck and had power back. Drove to work (85 miles) no problems, but fluid is way low now (not on stick, but visible in resivoir. Hoses all look good. Fluid on underside of pump and lower.
I have a new pump sitting in my garage waiting to be installed too. I need to order the Gould seal kit before I do so. I have read its easier to remove the hoses, unbolt the vacuum pump with the power steering pump still attached, and pull them out as one unit. I guess its easier to separate the two once they are out. Thats the route im going to take.
I would agree. They are easy enough to separate on the vehicle but you have to remove the vac pump too (to do the seal) so why go through the trouble of separating on the vehicle it is much easier to pull them out as one unit and separate on the bench.
