Getting ready to service the PS system again, and add a remote filter. Is there a screen in the system somewhere I should take a look at?

Thanks Ryan.

I thought I remembered someone indicating there was an inlet screen at one point. Probably another pump, in another application... things bleed together over time.

Not sure about 3rd gen, but on the2nd gen, pull the high pressure line, then take out the pressure valve assembly. Large nut on back of pump. There is a screen in the end of the pressure valve assembly.

A standard PH8A filter and corresponding head... I figure it won't impede flow too badly, and has a bypass (not that PS fluid is that dirty).

Interesting, I would have never thought of an oil filter. I have been looking at the BT839 since its used on trannsmissions and the PS in 3rd gens uses ATF.

I considered a Magnefine, but I don't think they have a big enough inlet/outlet.

There are quite a few applications that I have seen where a standard oil filter is used for ATF. A lot of people mistakenly use an oil filter in place of the AFT filter on a Subaru, and that never causes a problem.

The OE hose is 5/8 inch, or -10 AN; so I got to order some hose.

I'm going to mount the filter on my steering brace, passenger side.

standard oil filters are typically not used due to higher pressures involved with hydraulic apps, and the filters are allways installed on the return side which has low pressure.

I installed an oil filter on my Jeep power steering, its used mainly offroad and the steering takes some abuse in the rocks. Used a remote oil filter mount with the appropriate fitting for the return hose and used the exact same filter the engine uses just for convenience. One less filter number to remember. It works very well and I see no difference in performance but the fluid is always clean.

I figure if nothing else, it will provide nearly a quart of extra volume in the system and the added benefit of the filter.

I ordered the hose and fittings... I've got a couple days worth of wrenching on my junk to get everything done to it. Adding the PS filter is just one small thing.

Do you mind detailing how you are doing this and the parts required? Sounds like a good idea, I have a coolant filter on my "to do" list as well... Thanks

I'll get some pictures in a few days, but its done... took less than an hour.

I modified my filter head... the hole dropping into the filter was only 3/8", so I augered it out to 1/2". The inlet and outlet are 3/8"NPT, so that limited the JIC fitting ID... but I don't think it will make any difference... its 1/2" throughout.

I ordered some Parker hose and fittings through Mid-Atlantic Diesel (Thanks Lloyd!). Ordered WAY TO MUCH HOSE! I needed about five feet, but order 15 for some reason? The OE hose was 15. 9mm, the Parker is 5/8" (16. 0mm) and fit like a glove... I even used the OE hose clamps since its low pressure.

The way the ports came out of the filter head, it was easiest to drill and tap the passenger frame rail under the AC compressor. It might make removing the engine oil filter a little more difficult, but not much. I tilted the head back slightly from perpendicular to better clear the oil pan with the hoses. I actually plumbed the filter between the gear box and cooler, instead of between the cooler and pump... figured the hotter fluid would pass through the filter easier. The filter is protected by the steering brace and sway bar.

I took it for a 20 mile joyride, everything seems fine... there was some air in the system to work out. Seems completely normal. I'll run it a month or so, then pull the filter and change oil again... then I'll leave it in service a while. I like the fact it adds another quart of oil to the system, and that I now have filtration.
