Performance replacement muffler

98 auto with 215 5 spd motor?

Any comments about Powertrax products out there? I did several searches and couldn't find anything. If I'm missing something please point me in the right direction, otherwise tell me what you think. I'm running the 3. 54 rear end.

I've read some signatures on the TDR where people are listing this and I was just wondering if it is a worth while add on. They have two models to "provide maximum traction, street-ability, and easy installation. "

I didn't like it.....

I installed on a very bombed 97 Dakota. If you hammered it, it would lay down two very black, even strips like it's supposed to, but the general everyday "driveability" was maddening.



I had to feather the throttle when making 90 degree turns from a stop or the wheel hop/chirp was annoying. Forced me to change my driving habits... . if I misjudged time to get away from the stop and gave it any aggressive throttle all hell would break loose. Also, manuevering around parking lots... . backing up, turning etc. would produce a clunking sound that was too loud.
 
I have 3 of them,all in my plow trucks. Keep in mind you are installing a locker type differential,you should know this going in,there will be some driveability changes to the way it reacts,and behaves. I can live with mine's bad habits,my wife drives out 95 S Blazer daily,and doesnt complain at all,the days of one wheel peel are over,the good highly outweighs the bad,I need traction when plowing,I havent gotten anything buried since i put them in,with these powertrax units,my trucks are almost unstoppable in snow,mud,and even with one rear wheel in the air,doesnt matter the other will dig and chew right up and over the obstical. It sounds like 24v-dsle tried to us his for street strip performance,I dont think it shines for that,a clutch type posi would be better for that application,but for a 4x4 that pushes,pulls,and works in 4wd for 100-300 hrs a winter,it is the ultimate for the buck,and ease of installation.
 
Im in southern IL about twenty min. from St Louis Mo.



A trick i was taught along time ago, when your stuck or one wheel is spinning freely. use your brakes enough to hold that wheel from spinning and then apply power to get out, while still holding the brakes.



it has always worked for me. and brakes come free with every automobile purchase :D



its fun trying to do this with a manual transmission too... makes for better motor skills. :D
 
I have a Lock Rite (Powertrax) in my F350 plow truck with a mildly modified 460, it behaves nicely. Occasionally it lets out a "locker snap" kinda like the Detroit in the rear of my Jeep. If you stand on the go pedal going around a corner then you get wheel hop or barking from the inside tire. Under normal conditions it unlocks nice around corners. I have TOOLED on this thing with no failures. I had one in a 2wd Toyota Tacoma for a few months and hated it. It was obnoxios in parking lots turning tight corners, it would cause the whole truck to buck and I'd have to dump the cluch to get it to smooth out. I dont know if the weight of the big truck makes it happier or if its an auto vs. stick thing. I also have a Lock Rite in the front of my Jeep and it never comes unglued. Once the limmited slip in my Dodge wears out I'm going to install a Powertrax unit. Install isn't that difficult. I've done around six of them, the toughest ones are the third member type axles (ford 9", toyota, some GM etc. . ) but any decent shadetree mech. can do it in a couple of hours.

We've had guys in our 4x4 club break some of these lockers. I personally don't think they're strong enough for the toque of our cummins. I would put in a detroit locker over a powertrax anyday.



BTW, I run ARB air locker in my FJ40 and never had a problem over 3 years of hard wheeling.

IN AN 80?

Has any one put one of these in an 80? After sugesting it in a different thread I have not been able to find a part number of the Dana 80 rear end.

Anyone try their 'No-Slip' version?

I had one of Powertrax's Lock-Right lockers on a '97 1/2 ton after tearing the spider's out of the rear... it was great, never had any issues. Was considering one for the new dog, but as many others have mentioned, I'm not sure if the lock-right would be strong enough for the power I hope to end up with. Called Powertrax, they said not to run the lock-right if worried about durability, and said to run their "no-slip". He said they're rated up to 1000 ft lbs torque... and would warranty it to the 1000 ft lbs torque rating. They're a bit more than the lock-right, but are said to work just as well and be stronger.



So has anyone tried one of these yet?

Which isn't much when you consider our baseline and gear multiplication.
 
I have the lock right locker in mine. You have to get used to it and just kinda keep pressure on the rearend to keep it from ratcheting. It is a locker and both wheels spin when I have a load of corn on the truck going to the feeder or the gooseneck loaded with wood. I couldn't say that with the lsd that came with the truck. They e-mailed me not long ago and there is a heavy duty pin that can be placed in the locker for the diesel engines. I have the Dana 80 and so far would do it again. I think a person has to make up his mind whether he wants traction or a perfect smooth cornering truck. I keep my tires rotated avery 5000 miles or so and so far tire feathering has not been an issue with me.
 
I have the Powertrax No-Slip System for my Dana 80. It has some quirks. I haven't had a lot of time and conditions on it to really give it a workout. I did notice that a sharp turn out of a parking lot it can give some very funny feelings like the truck doesn't want to move. As stated above you have to watch how close you turn in front of someone from a side road or lot. Also, they list the Dana 80 in our trucks as having the 37 spline axles. I found out the hard way mine has the 35 spline axles. The part number I installed in mine is 92-0480-3500. Also be aware that in a Dana 80 you have to pull the carrier to install this. The Spider gear center pin will not come out past the ring gear. You have to pull the ring gear off the carrier.

this is an e-mail i got from them when I asked for info about their no-slip. Sounds like it is the wrong one. :confused:
 
i too have to NO-SLIP powertrax locker, i installed it myself in my 1992 Dakota, and have to say that it is the best money i have ever spent (exept the PE comp). with worn tires on all four corners, i tore through the thickest mud, and off-camber situations are no problem.

Bill, that is the same response I received from Ken @Powertrax. I was just too stupid to pull an axle and count the splines before I ordered mine from Summit. They verified the application in their catalog. I installed the 92-0480-3700 and when I went to install the axles they flopped inside the couplers. I emailed and called Powertrax and they did not respond as later I found out Ken thought I was just providing feedback. I had to remove the carrier again and reinstall the original setup and then I contacted Summit and ordered the 3500 set as I counted my splines and they were 35 instead of 37. Buyer beware. They will not reimburse you for not taking the time to see what is really in your rear (or front) axle. Just some words of advice to save someone a lot of grief.

no slip power trax in an 80

I put "a no slip" power trax in my dana 80 i needed it to have some give when i tow around turns thats why i diddnt get the lock right type. it works great . the 3. 54 gear is fat enough you have to remove it to remove the pin . but its not bad. mopar says to replace the ring bolts if you remove them and i did (almost 8 bucks a bolt ouch!)

keep in mind when installing the lock right in a heavy loaded truck around turns something has to give and the lock right under load wil not give.

i use a lock right in my 68 charger mostly for the track. :D

No slip in a dana 70

Will a no-slip fit in a limited slip dana 70 carier? Or will i need to find an open carier?
