Hello all.

Can someone give me the rundown on how a pre-turbo pyrometer probe install is accomplished?

I was looking around in my engine compartment, and it's a bit more cramped than my '01 was, not to mention laid out differently...

How do you drill, or catch/clean up drill debris?

Would it be less hassle to go post-turbo?

Thanks all.

Have you ever done a pyro install before? If not there is an excellent set of instructions on this page. These instructions are set up for second gen trucks but they are basically sound. Only diffrence being you'll have to drill your third gen manifold in front of the turbo near the outlet of cylinders 3 or 4. Good luck.

What do you mean "in front of the turbo near the outlet of sylinders 3 or 4... "

I drilled mine just as the picture shows. Near cylinder 4 right by the flange for the turbo mounting.

As far as I know, I did everything right???

You can drill it where the picture shows if you like but it's difficult to get to on the third gens. You'll be drilling horizontally and I'm not sure there's clearance for the drill? Anyhow, that should work but I drilled on the top of the manifold, straight down. I can't remember exactly but I think I was rignt in the output of the #4 cylinder. The probe wil get exhaust gas from cylinders 1,2,3, and 4 in this location. Sorry if I confused anyone :)

The drill was a little tight but I did it ok. With the intake tube removed, it gave me the room I needed.

I am trying ot figure out how to get my EGTs down. At full throttle... I can get 1400 easy. I tried straight piping this weekend and it seemed to make the EGTs go up FASTER and run just as hot.

I was wondering if the placement of my temp probe was always going to show hot like that no matter what I do???

These third gens run hot. My stock etc would tough 1250° on a good grade. Open intake and exhaust help some as will a fueling box with timing advance (this also helps economy). If you want them a lot lower you'll have to start turbo shopping to find more air. You should have no need for that though at stock fueling levels.
