My diesel guru tells me to put the sensor downwind of the turbo, because it will drop the sensor and toast your turbo. Any comments thanks.

Bob, there's been alot of discussion on this. The question you should ask yourself is whether you plan on any HP enhancements or will remain stock. If you are staying stock, post turbo will be okay for you. If you are going to bomb that Cummins, then you need to place the sensor pre-turbo to accurately monitor the gases. I'm not a turbo or a diesel guru, but I don't recall one member complaining of a egt. probe snapping off and grenading the turbo. Just my $. 02.

Go farther back in this discussion forum and there is ALOT of talk on this matter. The above member had it right. If you have ANY plans to bomb your truck, mount it PRE Turbo. As i have mentioned before, you stand a better chnace of being struck by lightning then your Thermocouple Catastrophically failing. Banks, TST, Jannetty Racing, etc all recomend PRE Turbo mounting for accuarte readings. It is simple to install and in the end, you know you did it right and there will be no guessing as to what your EGT readings are.

Better yet, put one in both places to completely remove ALL of the guesswork. One gauge, two probes, and a switch. There is a recent thread on this, so do a search.

Ditto to all of the above responses. I'm stock, but I still went pre-turbo. If you don't seat the probe to far into the manifold, where it could vibrate against metal and cause stress, I doubt you will ever have to worry about the probe breaking.

By the way, welcome to the board and the TDR. You will love this place.

I'm not sure on the argument that it will "drop the probe" is valid. I believe the probe tip would erode off before it burned in two. So what's going to drop into the turbo... . is it the tip of the probe? Whatever it is, think about it this way. Melt a piston and pieces of it would probably come through the turbo to get out the exhaust pipe and find a new home. When I pulled my Westach out of my 98 after two years, it had some carbon on it, but I saw no pitting or evidence that the probe was being eaten away. As a matter of fact, I couldn't get the probe out of the wedge nut because of the little crimp put in there when I tightened it up. I sold it to a TDR member who at last contact was still using it and it worked fine. I think the probe will go out before it falls apart and goes through the turbo. I like the fast readings I get pre turbo and to know what my EGT's are from the cylinders. I want to monitor the pistons and turbo so I'm pre turbo.

Hi Allen the gauge still works perfect.

I never used the old thermocouple since I sell thermocouple for industrial application.

I did go with an Incoloy sheath #ad

Bob incoloy is a liitle tough on the pocket book ain't it? I used stainless probes (K type industrial thermo)with a Omega 1/16 DIN meter. Do you know what the probe sheath is made of that everyone else is using? If it is stainless they won't have to worry about it breaking of.

Ralph they are stainless. And Incoloy does not cost much more and its rated for higher operating temps

If your engine exhaust ever got hot enough to melt your Thermocouple (Almost 2000 degrees) your pistons would have melted by then. Dont worry about the thermocouple failing.

A couple of months ago I asked if anybody actually knew someone who lost a turbo because of a pyro temp probe failing. If anybody did, they did not reply because all I got was negative. I have mine mounted pre turbo and not even worried about it.

Thanks to all you guys for your response to my question re: pre turbo pyro sensor. Guess I'll be going pre turbo. This was my first time in here and think it's great!
