I've seen boxes like the Edge EZ and the Power Puck referred to as "pressure" boxes here. What "pressure" is being related to? Cylinder pressures? Injection pressure? Several searches haven't given me an answer.

I had an EZ on my rig for a few years before it crapped out and the truck ran ragged. I yanked it. Shortly afterwards, it was time for a new VP. Being that the truck is an '02, with the infamous brass sleeves, it would died early anyway. (I don't blame the EZ.) I replaced the VP years ago now and have been running ever since w/o any power upgrades. (Left the boost elbow in place though for all that's worth. )

I've got the itch to upgrade the truck a little again. Friday I installed a 4" turbo back exhaust. After 11 years, the original system was pretty rusty. The tailpipe had rusted and fallen off. (Pretty easy except for rolling around in some left over ice/snow under the truck.) Saturday and Sunday were dedicated to replacing/rebuilding the PS pump and vacuum pump. I also tied in a PS cooler and filter at the same time. VERY long tough days for this geezer. Damn it was a lot of work. :)

So now I'm weighing my options as to tweek a little more power out of the rig. 275's and a boost fooler? A Smarty? Another EZ? Drivetrain is stock. I'm not looking for a race truck. Just a little more zap for pulling a 1K boat (with 5K lbs of lures in it.) Obviously, more mileage would be a plus.

So, what combo, if any, would be my best bet for increasing MPG's, if that can be forecast?

TIA!

The Edge EZ is a pressure box on the common rails, not the VP44 engines. You can generally do one mod with the stock turbo and keep egt's reasonable. RV275s, the genuine Bosch injectors, are good and I dyno tested them in an HO at 42 HP more. The Smarty is another proven upgrade, and enables you to read and clear trouble codes. The Smarty, of course, includes boost fooling.

If I buy a set of 275's off the shelf can I assume they'll be matched up close enough to run as is or should they be tested at a shop before install?

I ran an ez (and as Joe mentioned pressure only for common rail trucks) and rv275's with a 4 inch exhaust for quite a few miles and thought it quite respectable. Nothing outrageous at all but it did everything I used my truck for very nicely. I have since done more work to it but in all honesty, at least for my needs I should have just stuck with that. I have added power that I very rarely use and perhaps more importantly don't really need. On the plus side I have spent quite a bit more money on it just to do my part to help the economy and learned more about the truck and upgrades. Most of which I was blissfully ignorant of beforehand. My truck gets the same mileage now as it did before any of the mods. I have also added hundreds of pounds of weight such as larger tires, gooseneck hitch, bumpers, lights, headache rack, toolbox etc so if my truck went on a diet it might get better mileage with the mods. Empty I consistently get 18 to 19mpg mixed in town and 19-21 on the highway (1-1.5mpg less in the winter months). I don't drive like grandma but I don't hotrod around either. While this site only runs what $35 a year it has cost me thousands, just kidding this place is great and have learned a lot as well as saved thousands in repairs.

If you want power go with the Edge Comp if you got gauges or the Edge Juice with Attitude if you don't already have gauges. But if you are more after mpg go with the Smarty.

Both the EZ and the Comp(without tapping the injection pump wire) are "timing" boxes and boost foolers. I have ran my Comp that way for years. It is programmed 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 and gives you in cab adjustment rather than moving the EZ jumper.

Smarty should be getting close to the new product line being released for the 2nd Gens...I know, I know!

If you get six Bosch injectors, not knock-offs or rebuilt ones, from a Bosch shop, they will be balanced close by the factory. Again, stay conservative if you want reasonable egt's with the stock turbo.

We have seen MPG similar to stock at 100HP and lower. Going to 150HP expect about a .5mpg to 1mpg lower. Definitely stay with a bosch body.when we build injectors we match the nozzles to within .03LPM with calibration fluid at 1500psi similar to how flow is checked on common rail injectors. Many places use air at 50psi. There is a profound difference in quality control.

I use to run a hypertech programmer on my 01 it was good for about 40 hp on the Dyno gave me about 1.5 mpg . I liked it because it could read and erase codes and it could calibrate the speedometer for different size tires . Im thinking about getting another one just so I can calibrate the speedometer on both trucks I have now

I put in a set of rv 275, with a adjustable boost elbow and fooler. Set boost at 28 lbs. Iam very happy with the moderate power gain. Am still tracking mpg, but so far have ben getting 17.3 city 21.2 hwy. That's a 1.5 increase at least as long as I don't play with the power to much.
