The Truth About Filters – Finally

G-56 Transmission

No worries. Now, I just need to call them and find out which port on the head is the pre-filter pressure and which port is the post-filter pressure. ;) I have a fuel pressure gauge waiting to be installed.

I called them this morning with the same question. Just got my Westach gauge. I have their universal mount as I have the Banks high ram and couldn't use their "designed for my truck" kit. I was told that the left port is the clean side.

Thanks for the info. I’m kinda planning on two gauges for a pre and a post filter reading so I can tell when the filter is getting bad. However, I would also like a gauge in the cab so I can get a reading under load. I’m just having a hard time determining which setup would be “better”.

I was also undecided, but I like the Westach electric gauge. Don't want to take a chance with mechanical gauge in cab. From what I saw on this forum, any gauge, not installed properly, will not be accurate. As long as the sending unit for the Westach is NOT mounted on the engine, it should be a reliable package. I got mine from Geno's Garage, along with the bracket and 30" hose. I change oil every 3000 miles and replace fuel filter every other oil change. If you install your gauge on the clean side and replace fuel filter at the same time, you will have baseline readings with the new filter. I don't see a big need for two gauges for this reason. To me, two gauges mean twice the expense, twice the installation, and double the chance for problems.

I was concerned about the expense too, but found a couple of folks running this gauge with a needle valve without any problems. Total per gauge is about $15. To mount two gauges on the Prime-Loc head, you do need a couple of fittings to spread the gauges apart as the holes are a little too close.

Good luck with your installation. I'm going to do mine over the weekend. Just the Westach gauge in the cab. I have to change my A-pillar mount to the three-gauge plus tweeter. Currently have the two-gauge which houses my boost and EGT gauges. My Prime-Lok is located on the frame about a foot behind the bumper. Very handy for filter changing, but not for checking gauges. As often as I change filters, I see no need for the two extra gauges. Not to mention the needle valves and extra fittings. Guess that's what's so great about "personalization". What works for one doesn't always work for another. Just glad there's all this "stuff" out there for us to pick and choose. Let me know how it all works for you.

You’re probably right about my setup being overkill. I just got headed down the path and lost sight of what I was really trying to accomplish. ;-) I already have an isolator I picked up along the way and should probably just do what you are doing and run one gauge into the cab and be done. Thanks for being a voice of reason. All I need to find now is some line to plumb the gauge. I’ve checked a few auto parts stores and they just look at me like I’m crazy.
