One of our work trucks is a 01 dually with 172k on the clock. I have a post in the 911 section but thought I'd try here, too. They pulled a back hoe a couple hundred miles with the truck yesterday and it ran fine, but when they started it today it was blowing white smoke and had a really bad miss. The miss was more noticable at higher rpms. I checked the codes with the key and got 1693. The weird thing was it didn't show the pECU at all. My 02 says pPCU and pECU before it goes back to showing the milage. Could this indicate a problem? I put my cheap code scanner on it and it says the truck has no codes. I plugged the scanner into my car and it picked up the code for a failed O2 sensor that has been there forever, so I'm pretty sure the scanner is working.

Anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking about an injector causing the problem, the only thing that makes me wonder is the truck has been running fine. It only happened the one time after the truck had sat overnight. I went out and started the truck this morning and it was fine. Any ideas?

To me if your VP is original, it sounds like you should have the 0216 to go with the 1693.
What is your Fuel Pressure?
Rick

Fuel pressure is 9psi at idle, not great but better than I was expecting to see. The truck had the VP44 replaced along with the intake lift pump installed about 70k miles ago. I changed the fuel filter (I've never seen a filter as bad as this one was) when this first happened and the truck has been running great ever since. Maybe we "dodged a bullet" on this one.

You only need 5psi for the VP44 at idle. I have found some interesting things. On automatics the speed sensor on back of over drive housing drivers side can make truck mimic everything going bad including VP, injectors etc, with no codes. Also on back differential that sensor can also make truck sluggish, they both talk to ECM. Sometimes I will disconnect both batteries over night to clean ECM.

I hooked my little code scanner up, and it didn't show any codes. I still get the 1693 code in the odometer window. The code scanner at autozone didn't show any codes either. The truck has been running great ever since I changed the fuel filter. I'm betting this isn't over yet, but it is hard to fix the truck when nothing is wrong.

Concerning the 1693 code, I had the same problem. I purchased a good quality code reader from Auto Zone and it indicated that there were no codes. I had my dealership read the DTC codes for me today and the real symptom was "Water in Fuel" was set. I have the FASS lift pump and the installer disconnected the WIF and the Fuel heater and removed the fuel filter assembly. They just put silicone on the two connectors and let them hang.

I reconnected the WIF sensor and taped it off to protect it from the elements. I cleared the codes and hopefully that will take care of that.

There isn't a lot you can do with a generic code reader as I found out when it comes to our trucks. I have another thread concerning code readers and I'm still looking for one that will really help.
