Ok. Today I was sitting behind a car at a stop sign on a slight incline. I went to move forward and all the truck did was rev (up to 2000rpm). I let off the pedal (the truck did not move backward like it would if the transmission was in neutral), pushed back down on the pedal and the truck finally moved sluggishly at first but faster when she got moving (rpm about 1500-1600). I have a 4 speed auto 47RE that had a very small, slow leak from the temp probe in the 95 cooler line. I checked the fluid the other day and she was full with no leak from the temp probe. Could my transmission be going south? I don't tow but occassionally haul my 4 wheeler in the back (once last summer). What if anything can I do to forestall the future transmission replacement? Can adjusting the transmission bands help?

It sure sucks to be on an island where I have no ATS or DTT shops. How hard is it to swap out trannys or TC's and how do I determine that is exactly the problem?

thanks in advance

I`ve had that problem before when I was low on fluid. Are you checking your fluid in Neutral(and running, of course), not in park? There is a 1/4 to 1/2" difference in the fluid levels between those two.

I fill mine all the way to full when in neutral. This makes it way over full when in park, but thats where I want to be. .

Also, when you refilled, did you use dextron 3 or atf +3 . atf +3 is dodge's formula, dextron will give you slippage problems. atf+4 is supposedly better, but +3 has always worked nice for me. .

good luck

I check the fluid level this morning (neutral, running, after a 40 minute drive so it was warm but not hot and after going thru all gears) found I was low. With no stores open at 0645 I used what I have on hand. I put in a quart of Napa Premium Performance ATF Dexron III / Mercon. That brought the level up of normal operating range. I'm still a little low (like you I want to be full in neutral and over in Park) so I'll go buy somemore tonight. I guess I'll be changing out my transmission fluid and filter (plus adjusting the bands) a bit sooner then I wanted.

Does anyone know of a good to excellent ATF fluid? I have walmart, Napa and a couple of small auto parts stores. Can this stuff be bought over the internet and shipped to Kodiak Alaska?

Thanks for the fast response.

Are you sure you weren't in limp mode? Sounds like you were in 2nd or 3rd gear. Is it shifting back into 1st when you come to a stop? Count the number of shifts it takes to get to speed. You should get 4 total shifts when you get to highway speeds (including OD & lockup)

Wal Mart here sells Penzoil+3 and their Super Tech brand +3, I haven't talked to anyone who has used either though. bg

I'll do a search on limp mode and see if that is my problem. I can feel 4 distinct shifts getting to highway speeds out of OD. I'll try the same test with OD on this afternoon. I just hope this is not the transmission going south. Boy that would suck!!!

thanks for all the assistance.

Counted 4 shift points this afternoon. So now I am not sure what to do. I bought 3 bottles of Quaker ATF+3 and I will check the level this weekend.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

You can do a quick flush of whats in the pan by taking off one of the front cooler lines and running the trans in neutral until the fluid stops, then kill the motor. This will let you flush around 3-4 quarts. Good time to do an inspection of the fluid, if it looks dark or smells burnt, you may have had an overheat or the like. . If you have a good bit of dextron in there I would flush it. dex3 causes problems with some, and none with others, hard to say.

I have used Penzoil +3, and Advanced Auto house brand both with no problems. I would think as long as it specs to Chrysler ATF+3 you could use any house brand, i. e. Napa, Wal Mart... etc.

You fixed it. It was just too low on fluid.

As a side note, if the filter is plugging up it will do this also.

Bands have no effect on this symptom.

I hope to come up there and visit in the next few years!!

Rear band------too tight, bind up. Feels like park.

Rear band------too loose, slips in reverse

Front band-----too tight, bind up/sloppy shift to 3 rd

Front band-----too loose, slips in 2 nd also a flair up during shift
