Why Did I Wait???

hard starts, rough idle

A friend of mine has an '05 RamQC CTD. He installed what I'm assuming is the Edge EZ (he called it the EZ tuner). Shortly there after he fowled?, dropped?, etc... one of his injectors. They replaced that for $900 since they voided his warranty. Since then he has been getting 15mpg highway and after 500 miles the back of his truck behind the exhaust is totally black. Dodge is saying that don't know what it is, because nothing is showing up on their diagnostics. Anybody have any ideas?

Probably lost the pressure relief valve, truck will be low on power and smoke due to low psi at the injectors and poor atomization.

Thanks, I'll get him to have that checked.

On the flip side, my truck since I've had it has never puffed an oz. of black smoke. I get 19-21mpg on highway with all my modifications. Even when I drive like Mario Andretti and and pulling a 9000# camper. It seems fine to me, but does that mean there's a little more power that I could be getting? Or am I dialed in just right? I always see diesels at the drag strip and even some of my friends with stockers that say they get black/grey smoke when they get into it. Haven't raced one of them yet though. Don't get me wrong, I love my mpg and the fact my truck doesn't turn black on one side. Just greedy I guess.

What level is your buddy running his EZ on?? The paper work that comes with it states not to run it on level 3 unless you have other upgrades. I called the tech line for further explanation, and they told me it was not advisable unless you go with a bigger turbo and change the relief valve. I have run mine on 2 95% of the time. I have tried level 3 but all i get is a bunch of smoke.

After he had the injector problem and got screwed by DC he had his mechanic take the EZ off. I'm not sure what level he used. I'm also not sure if there is anyway to really get the computer back to stock after taking if off? Or if they have tried bringing it back to stock?

I does not affect the computer. I intercepts the signal going to the computer, modifies it, then sends it to the computer. Then it does the same thing with the signal from the computer on the way back to the fuel rail. The computer has no record of any thing that goes on except what it is sent by the box. Basically, it tells the computer one thing while doing another, it lies.

How did he get screwed by DC?

If you think the EZ just one level 3 has bunch of smoke, combine that with the Hot juice or tst and turn them up. Black out conditions!

Ok. Here's the deal.

1. DC completely voided his 200K extended warranty because he installed the programmer and has yet to be able to diagnose the problem and/or fix the truck. Their telling him now it'll be $4200 to replace all the injectors, fuel rails?? (I'm assuming all the HiPress stuff), and a few other things and that might not fix the problem. They want to do that before looking at anything else.

2. He was told that if he wasn't towing and was on the interstate to put it on Level 3?? I don't know by who, or if that is ok under those circumstances. He's got intake and exhaust upgrades, but I don't know what the intake included.

3. We've got a buddy at church that teaches diesel mechanics so he's trying to help him as well.

4. I've gotten him to call Edge now and tell them what's going on to see if they can get him in the right direction. Hopefully their customer service will be helpful with his situation. (by the way, don't try 1-800-360-EDGE unless you like heavy breathing).

I don't think the $4200 will happen, but that's what he got told this morning.

That's retarted. Checking the relief valve is simple and takes 10 minutes. if it leaks, then it's cheap in comparison and takes another 10 minutes.

He needs to tell that dealer to get their head outa their butt. Heck you 2 can check that valve your selves. Search for a few posts on the topic. it's rather simple and just requires 2 people.

Sorry guys. That one was a definite brain fart / carpel cranial deviation. I do get 19-21mpg on highway empty, which I consider good for what I have on the truck. Towing the camper, I'm 12-13mpg. Thanks for not flaming me.

The dealers using your buddy as an example for others and making a profit on the side. Do as the other guys suggest. Check that relief valve.

How did the dealer know he had an EZ on his truck??

Wouldn`t it show up if the dealer scanned the system. From what I`ve read, only the Smarty is traceless, isn`t it?

Not sure if he even took it off before he took it up there. Atlantic Cummins is saying he needs to do the same thing, but their price is a little better. I believe he's going to ask them about checking/changing the relief valve before they do the tear-down.

Edge Juice Attitude, TST, MP-8, Edge EZ, anything that is a "piggy back" devices is untraceable to the computer.

Of the "downloaders" the smarty claims to not leave a foot print when you remove the software from the truck.

BIG DIFFERENCES as far as how you get more fuel into you motor here. They all achieve the same thing, but with different methods.

As far as the EZ being detectable, it's the human you need to trick, not the truck or the computer scanners.

If you leave the velco on the fuses box, or even the glue stuff that velcro will leave behind, that's a sign of a box.

Unhooked pryo wires laying around under the hood would be a sign to me.

If you have tapped or cut wires, that's another sign (2nd gens mainly... )

You have to be cleaver here. If my case, if I wanted to try to stiff the dealer for a blown motor, I would removed the 2 edge boxes, replace my stock filter and purchase an a-piller EGT guage since I'm not going to replace my exhaust manifold. barrow my buddies fuse panel cover (since a too new one may be to obvious) At this point all the dealer will see is modded exhaust and an EGT gauge. NOTHING that would technically ever break a motor...

Ohh and I should wash the truck to geth the soot off the back right side! :-laf

What the EZ is doing is just taking the signal from the Rail pressure sensor, telling the computer the rail is at 15,000 PSI when the ECU is commanding 18,000PSI. Even tho the Rail really does have 18,000PSI. When the computer asks for more, more gets in the rail, but the EZ will only show the computer 18,000 PSI when there really is 22,000psi. More power. (I think I explained that right).

Same ideas with boost. EZ shows the computer 20psi when there really is 25psi. The computer wants 22PSI, but the EZ wants 28PSI, so as it fools the computer the REAL pressure is higher then what it thinks is there. Are we confused yet?

Thanks to Jason I don't have to explain.

the told us they found a dr. performance module on our 03. pulled it off a day b4 we took it in. no gauges just an intake, but they swore that they could tell
