We have to replace our LP bottles or the valves by April 1, heres my problem: I have a Avion 35' Fifth wheel that has a control panel inside that I can check the level of the propane, the bottles have a sending unit/guage on them.

I have been told that this type of setup is no longer available????

Can anyone help me with this one?? It will suck if I can't use the panel to check the levels anymore as the bottles are in a compartment that is hard to get them in and out to check the levels

Hope someone can help, signed Frustrated

From what I've read, you don't have to have the new valves by April 1, you just can't get the bottles filled after that date without them. I will check with my local RV supply guy tomorrow about your problem and get back to you.

OPD valves

You might be able to take your empty tanks into a gas distributor and get them to put the OPD valve in and re-certify them. It's not a permanent solution since the re-cert is only good for 5 years and a new tank is good for 12.

I have standup bottles that are affected.

My current bottles have 2 ports in the top, one is for the valve and the other is for the sending unit.

The problem there is that the valve port is off center and the new OPD valves won't screw in without hitting the guard, so it looks like its not possible to replace them (I think).

Plus some are saying that the OPD's will interfere with the sending unit ????

Thanks for the help

I had heard about this and didn't think it could be true. Who's supposed to pay for the valve upgrades? They pass a law and just like that your supposed to change all your bottles at your expense? I can understand it with any new bottles sold after a certain date but being forced to replace or retrofit all existing bottles???

Our elected officials are looking out for the embiciles that overfill their LP bottles and therefore blow themselves up.

I learned how to fill LP bottles about 30 years ago and never ever saw any blow up or endanger anyone. Of course, I used that extinct item called common sense and followed the tank manufacturer's specifications.

I bet there have not been . 00001% accident with the tanks we are using today.

Someone please jiggle the handle on the way down - our beloved Country is in the toilet!

According to Highways magazine the law applies to 4 to 40 pound vertical nonstationary DOT cylinders for RV use. Hopefully yours don’t fall into this category. I just replaced mine on my travel trailer. They were only 7 years old, but after April 1st, I can’t get them refilled. The new cylinders have to have overfill protection and valves that can’t release gas unless a hose is plugged into them. Just another government effort to idiot proof something. I’m sure the idiots who caused this rule change will find a way to kill themselves even with the new style bottles. I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing or not. Jeff:D

My tanks are the OPD style but friend I camp with has the old style. What he is going to do is fill both bottles end of this month and wait till each emties before replacing. The 30# bottles are getting hard to get around here. In my part of the country a 30# bottle will last close to a year. Most have electric heat now and the stove doesn't use much propane.

OK, so let me get this straight, the 2- 30 lb horizontal bottles in my Lance camper are OK and the verticle 20 lb. bottle on my gas grille is OK since its not RV use?? Do I have it?

I just got off the phone with one of our local companies that sell propane and they confirm that all vertical bottles 1lb and up fall into this. They quoted $35. 00 for the new valve. If you buy a new valve your old bottle can only be recertified for 5 years. If you buy a new bottle it is certified for 12 years. They quoted $35. 00 for a new 20# bottle. I have three 20# bottles around the house. This SUCKS BIG TIME!!!! My 5th wheel has 2 30# that lay down so they are exempt (at this time).

Take your bottles to one of the propane bottle exchange places like super market, Home depot and exchange them for the new style valve, doesnt cost anymore. I have done that and it cost $13. 00 exchange for a full bottle withe the new style valve

OK, next stupid question. Whats the "New" valve look like compared to the old. Just to make sure I'm getting the new when I exchange.

I just priced new 30lb. tanks last weekend

got three differnt prices of course.

72. 99 at RV store

48. 99 at RV store

44. 99 at Northern Hydraulics.

I think I'm going to do the fill up at the last minute,

then buy new when each runs out.

My 2¢!

Just got my two valves replaced for $20. each. Called around to different places prices as high as 35. Glad i checked other places. If anybody in auburn ca. check with american river gas thats where i got mine done.

I just got a strip that sticks on the outside of the bottle and will read how much propane there is in the tank if it is a vertical tank.

You just pour some hot water on it and it shows you the level of the propane in the tank.

Well I was quoted 69. 95 for my 7 gal bottles replaced with a retrofited bottle. I looked at my local ACE hardware or TrueValue can't remember which but the valve was 21. 95 so I purchased the valve installed it in my tank Stamped a new date on it and now it is good for another 5 years. Already had it filled twice no questions asked... ... :D :D :D
