Willyslover, Do you know a guy named Jerry Tarvin? He is from California too. I see him in car chat rooms sometimes. He has a yellow '42 Willy`s with a Hilborne injected 16 plug HEMI! Awesome ride!. He says he used to race factory Max Wedge and Hemi cars in the mid 60`s. His '62 Dodge Dart "HEMI" wagon was featured in Mopar Muscle, Jan 99. #ad

HEMI. . know the ride not the man. . I havn't done drags for many years, still enjoy big HP just got tired of "HE WITH THE MOST SPONSORS WINS" issues. . thought sprinters would be more fun, was/is Qubic hole in which to pour big $$$ but loads of fun. . [BTW I know of an original '70 hemi cuda with less than 20K miles. spends It's whole life in a garage TALK ABOUT A WASTE]. . my next/last street rod will be a 33Willys 800+ HP. . will start after my CJ7 project is completed... but ted i have skipped to 4 and 6 without getting the rest , i will have to drop back 20 and punt ... i will have to dig deeper now and the little lady is going to kill me , we are homeless at the moment , but i will be warm in my heated leather seats ... but seriously , can i put an on/off switch on the VA???
EDIT ... ted how about a boost module of some sort , won't all this new found power need more boost , plus we don't want the check engine light ratting us out to DC... hehehe

I'm working on getting boost modules for a very reasonable price and will offer them when ready.
20 lbs. boost on a 24 valve is equal to 30 lbs on a 12 valve.
Boost is a product of restriction in the head and the 24 valve flows more air at the same RPM.
So to answer you question, Do You need more boost to make more power?
This is a two part answer; No not at the power levels most of you will be at with injectors and Van AAken CPC.
Yes if you are going beyond that.

Gee Ted,

I guess I did it all wrong. I bombed mine in the order of... 1, 4, 2, 6 and am now contemplating a new clutch (step 5) and an exhaust brake (step 9!). Someday i'll do step 3 (4" exhaust). I will wait until the stock one goes to hell. The baffles in the stock muffler are beginning to rattle. That day may be sooner than later. #ad

sean , i would just yank the stock muffler and resonator and either straight pipe it or install a straight thru muffler , that would be BETTER than the stock system and not be a huge waste of money on something headed to the dumpster ... i know have 3,4 and axed 6 till next month , i do need to get gauges though but the new home purchase this week is cramping my spendaholic ways ... the BOSS is none to happy about me and the new money pit ... lol

Hey Ted,
I like your ideas. However, because of that nagging need for power over doing things right, I'll put your CPC in first.
Once I figure out how to make the engine light go on, I'll make my own boost module or find one with a sane price. (hopefully yours)
At that point I'll probably be flying blind on the boost so hopefully the tweeter capable gauge brackets will become available and I'll do the gauge thing (like HVAC>>50+boost).
This will probably put us into mid summer and then I can get an exhaust kit so I can install it myself out in the summer grass (i. e. hay, not the other stuff).
Finally, after far too many trips to California I will settle down for HVAC's latest purple rain injectors after I get and post a nice video of a thunderstorm following him around California.
Now, if someone finds some nice swingwing cab steps, that might be nice for effect...

Then, as winter closes in I'll get the ESPAR bolted on (if we get a good price), and finally a set of tires so this beast can keep up with the snowmobile... . #ad

There have been rumors of the Van AAken allowing higher boost levels, but our own testing this week with a 98 24 valve with Gauges, K&N, JRE 4" exhaust, Bosch 275 hp injectors, and the Van AAken on board, says NO.

By the way! this truck Flies!!!!

The derating is still in tact.
This in not a problem as most people think.
The only time derating happens is at full throttle and with all this added power you won't need full throttle.
When the boost modules are ready I will test them on this truck and report the results.

i have the 4' exh. 275hp inj. and k/n filter, i have seen 29 psi. boost. this isn't normal is it. how will this affect the va box

Hello George,
Don't sweat it, it will have no affect on the box or how it works.
The Box leaves all Factory saftey features in tact and only boosts fuel delivery and timing for awsome gains.
The Boost levels different people will see will differ for several reasons; wastegate adjustments, exhaust, air filter, the boost gauge accuracy, injectors, auto or manual, and they are all going to see big improvements with the box no matter what the boost gauge says.
We have seen as high as 24 lbs without the box, that doesn't mean the derating isn't working.
Everything has limits.

What about the ECM cutting back the fuel at 20 psi? Will the VA take care of this?

Provided Vaughn is cooperative, and the dyno doesn't giveo out, I'm going to get a chance to run the ISB on a dyno in a couple of weeks, watch all the parameters, and then hook up a Van Aaken and try things again.

I will provide any interesting information I uncover, as well as the effectiveness of the "fix" I'm working on as well.

If you have any specific wishes, get them to me, and I'll try to help you out.

Stock turbo on a high horsepower ISB=big backpressuse #'s. Use a HX40 guys!!
If you use the 18. 5 housing, weld it shut! There is no need to wastegate it on the small motor. A company called "APEXi" sells a digital "in the cab" electronic device that can change the output signals from a M. A. P. or mass air sensor. It can be adjusted on a load/rpm/signal strength axis. Pretty trick unit!! #ad

An HX40 will not work on an ISB unless you do major modifications to fueling and reprogram the Air Fuel Control parameters so you can get fuel without boost.
The computer monitors boost and brings in the fuel to match, if you install an HX40 it will not make any boost and you will have the biggest dog you ever drove.
This may seem a little harsh, but it is to the point, without getting to deep into it.
