I installed an HX40 on my truck (12valve)last week, I can do anything I want with the fueling and it was still a slob, got worse fuel milage and I couldn't pull my trailer in double overdrive.
This particular HX40 had an 18. 5cm2 wastegated housing.
I have an HX40 coming with a 16cm2 wastegated housing and will test it an report the results.
I expect that it will work much better because the A/R ratio is close to the stock HX35.

Ted,
There is no need to use the wastegate on that housing as it is so large. You might as well weld it shut. #ad

As far as the electronics, I sell a unit from "APEXi" that controlls the output signal of a m. a. p. or mass air sensor. It is a very trick unit, that allows adjustment according to rpm and signal. #ad

Weld the wastegate shut on the hx40 if you are using the 18. 5cm2 housing as there is no need to "wastegate" it on the smaller motor.
"APEXi" sells a very trick unit that allows digital in cab adjustments of a mass air or M. A. P. sensor. The unit is adjustable with rpm and sensor output increments. #ad

Four times you said to weld the wastegate shut! I hope you mean the steel linkage, not the cast iron that can get pretty hot, with temperature cyling inducing cracks. I prefer to have the wastegate open at some pressure. "Some" Rams would get well over 45 psi otherwise with that housing. Check Piers' video on another thread in this forum before you believe that a Ram has to be a slob with the HX40 and 18. 5. His is an automatic. He started the run in 2nd and you can hear it shift to 3rd, and also hear him working the throttle to keep the tires smoking while not exceeding 4000 rpm. Porky posted about another Ram he rode in that was not a slob with the HX40. Time will tell with the ISB--it is a different challenge but some 24 valve engines may be up to it!

Pulling holeshots is one thing, towing trailers is a totally different world,
I now have the HX40 16cm2 turbo with the 370 hp injectors, Big Red does quite well around town and on the highway, the fuel milage has gotten better by 2 mpg.
The response is respectable but with some turbo lag, the mid range power is excellent.
The auto trucks have the advantage of the torque converter to help spool up, so turbine housing size is not so critical.
The manuals on the other hand is a whole different ball game.
I will post my findings in the 12 valve section when I get a chance.
I also have a 24 valve truck with an auto I just installed the same turbo on, with two boxes, VA and Blue Chip adjustable set on kill, 275 injectors, JRE 4", K&N, gauges, Pro Torque Low stall converter,Transgo shift kit, BD Pressure lock, JRE 1/2" fuel system.
This thing Flat out flies, and smokes quite well Till the turbo spools up, Response is excellent.

Ted,
Can I benefit from the blue chip adjustable on my 99 5 spd, equipped with DD I's VA elbow and DD boost module?

Yes If you have the HX40, We cleaned up the smoke today, I recieved a harness with the Blue chip box that did not belong to it, It was a boost fooler, there is one already built in the box, when I removed it, the truck stopped smoking, and now runs even harder, I feel this truck will run in the 14 second range in the quarter mile easily.

44 lbs boost, 1350 EGT all day, pulls like a corvette.

David, the 4-wire Blue Box taps into the MAP sensor, boost fooling capability is integral.
You will need a new clutch if you take the plunge. I get 100 horsepower to the ground with the box on the incinerate setting! #ad
That sound like it would improve your performance profile? #ad
#ad

David. . a must have is the clutch... on the second setting out of 4 it slips like your on goose sh@$... haven't even tried setting 3 or 4. . no sence the clutch would just laugh at me but the damn thing is worth the expense #ad

. . not like HVAC's yet but getting in the game at least

Newbie here . . asking all those questions you just answered again.

I have a new 5 speed. Although smoke is kinda cool . . I'd really hate to have an emmision related problem.

Smoke means unburned fuel . . right?

Is it a good thing to "smoke"?

I read that the higher stage injectors have a greater risk of smoking . . are the 275 injectors better in this respect?

Are there any gains realized with just the VA chip?

Do I need a dyno to see the performance improvement of the chip only bombing run?

Ted . . Prescribe an econimical path to greater HP gains.

I tow a 32' tagalong 8k GVWR trailer. Mostly flat country . . southern state traveling . . but would like the capability to do some mountain trips in the future.

Unless the stock 5sp clutch is a total dog . . no real reason to change it out yet . . and would prefer not doing a clutch now.

I'd like the 4" Exhaust system . . the chip v/s injector's is where Im totally in the dark.

Input would be appreciated . .

Michael

The HVAC sequence calls for Diesel Dynamics Stage III injectors and a boost module as your first modification. I do not believe you will need guages if you stick to the automatic spec injectors, ISB003A. Anything beyond that will require gauges. Also anything beyond that will require transmission upgrades or a clutch.

Enjoy your diesel monster #ad

Diesel Dynamics Stage III injectors as your first mod. Skip the gauges if you go with the ISB003A injectors. Anything beyond this will require transmission uggrades or a clutch. You will also need gauges then.

HVAC . . So the stage III's . . AND the VA cpc? Or just the injectors?

Will I NEED the 4" exhaust? What are the con's if I don't.

Will the above proposed setup pass any emmisions testing?

Are there any single performance solutions available? I've read that use of just the VA without the injectors smoke and visversa . . ol wives tale?

enlighten me please . . thanx!

Michael

Hi Ted,
What kind of gains could one expect if they only went as far as #3 on on Your list?
(I'm not ready to be my own warranty station just yet. ) #ad

Could You e-mail me with the cost of Your 4" system please? (absolutely no hurry on this, truck still on order)
Thank You! #ad
