Veterans Visit

So glad to see this Kneeling resolution

Update. Went to see the Doc today to find out what the bone scan and MRI tests revealed. Bone test came back clean but the MRI shows the cancer in some surrounding areas which pretty much makes surgery and removal not much of an option. The recommendation is radiology. The MRI also may have seen a small cancer growth in a hip bone that the bone scan did not show as it is very small at this point. So now it is a wait to see a radiologist and get their recommendations for treatment. So I understand the radiation is going to floor me and I will not feel as good as I do today for 6 Months after the final dose. This is gonna s**k.

Keep your chin up Dave. My wife battled with a rare cancer after our first daughter was born and she is still here today giving me orders and telling me how wrong I am.

Thanks guys, I am sure I do not know how miserable the radiation therapy is until I go thru it. Debating on taking the RV to Flagstaff and having it done there as it would be much cooler than Phoenix. I am sure every little bit would help but I guess it is also up to the VA since they are handling the financial part.

DavidC, my wife was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer ( what the docs call HER2negative) 5years ago.
you know the different stage you are at, stage 1 is good, stage 2 is OK, stage 3 means it is in your lymph nodes but not in other organs and stage 4 is lets say Not Good.

The wife got the full monte done to her.. mastectomy, lymphectomy, thryroidectomy, 4 doses of the Red Devil and 10 doses of another slightly more benign form of chemo, 52 doses of herceptor, 33 doses of radiation, she will be on some medications for the rest of her life and she's still going 5 years later.

I don't have any advice to offer except to say you are probably best off to take the treatment that offers the best percentage of survival and live your life to the fullest.... take comfort in the fact other people have been thru far worse and are still ticking.

radiation is going to give you a helluva sunburn, wherever they target it.. no sense in hiding it from you because the doctors are just going to lie just to make you feel better about it,but rest asured radiation is better than going thru chemo, based on what I saw as an outside observer while playing the part of primary caregiver.

good luck

6V92TA, sorry to hear what the Wife went thru which was definately a lot. Glad to hear she is doing well. The one thing on my side is that I know there have been people a lot worse off than me and are still living their lives. Some with restrictions and others that have no real after effects but you never know the outcome until that point happens. Thanks for the story behind the treatment. The Doc told me Chemo is the last resort when all the rest failed, hope I do not go that far.

Sounds like Love is in the air. Glad to hear all is well and happy.

You got this.

Thanks Wayne, I will try to do that thru this personal disaster. I hope that all that read this thread will be more aware of this type of cancer and be tested often to minimize the outcome as it can really turn your life upside down whether the treatment be removal, radiation or cryotherapy.

My little brother had stage 4 throat, same as Michael Douglas had.
That was over 6 yrs ago. MSK ROCKS!
Treatment sucked.
He had a feeding tube and still couldn't keep food down.
But, he's here today.
You got this.

Glad to here he fought and won. The food thing makes me think I will be doing a unadvertised diet. Thanks for the thought.

David, radiation technology is improving rapidly. It can be more focused and a bunch of stuff above my pay grade and my little bit of understanding is that it is not as rough as just a few months ago. May God grant you courage and His peace on your journey. Mark

Thanks Mark. Those are good words of encouragement on the radiation advancements. Hopefully I will be able to converse with all of you while being treated and let you know how it is going. No youtube tho.

My gall-bladder was removed about 25 years ago and it was in and out from day surgery; no big deal.

My oldest son has been battling stage 4 colon cancer for two years that had spread to his liver. He went to MD Anderson in Houston for treatment and is still fighting and looks good and strong. Tomorrow he gets his 31st dose of chemo. His numbers are down to around 7. The power of prayer can't be under-estimated! You are in our prayers.

Thanks Ed. Our prayers are with your family and the numbers going down are a good thing. I have heard that colon cancer can be cured if caught soon enough and Chemo is a very rough road. I congratulate him for having the stamina to go thru it.

The initial consultation is now scheduled for Monday 5/21 with MDAnderson. All of this is being done thru VA Choice. MD sent me to Sonora Labs for the latest PSA numbers. It has been a while since I dealt with private companies in Az. and it is down right horrible with Sonora at least. I have to say the VA has treated me very well and it is a world of difference. When I went to private places in Minot they treated Military/Veterans very well also. Talking with the Nurse at MD on the phone it seems to be a nice place and she stated the Doctor and staff appreciate everything the Military and Veterans do.
