Got mine installed today! So far . . . So Very Phat!!! More power, slower to max EGT spike, lower EGT's, and has way more grunt on the low end . . . my duallies broke loose and actually roasted pretty good for a bit till I settled her down. The real test will come Wednesday when I make my weekly fully loaded trip down to Southern California and back to Utah with three cars each way on my 50' car trailer. The Phat Shaft 62 shaved almost an hour off my typical trips with the old restrictive stock turbo HX35. When your talking a 10 to 11 hour drive almost an hour is a real lifesaver!

I know it is going to be better but how much? Since I make the same trip each week I have a pretty good idea how the truck/trailer behaves on certain hills. When I started out with this business a couple of years ago and the truck was still stock if I was really heavily loaded it would go over the worst of them at 35 mph. Did my mods (intake, exhaust, TST) but with no turbo upgrade and went over them at 45-50 mph real heavily loaded. Put on the Phat Shaft 62 and went over the worst of them 55 mph minimum with 60 or 65 mph + with more average loads. I think that 65 mph + is likely with this new Super Phat Shaft 62 combination. Will be happy to report when I know.

Well I too got the phat shaft 62 super installed on my 05 ram. Finished up last night. Man I cannot believe the spool up! It spools up if anything quicker than the stock unit but with more volume of air. This sps 62 really rocks. Because I did not record all the events with my stock unit my comparison is based on the feel of the truck and normal daily boost numbers. Seems to me this sps 62 boost at 5psi feels like about 10 to 12psi on my stock unit. It feels very responsive and quick even with tst turned off. IT still SPOOLS FAST.

The fun is really on when you step down on it. I can see 50 psi sustained. Where my stock unit would go to approx 45 then level off at 38 psi this unit will hit 45 or 50 and hold, just depends on what level the tst is on. My exhaust sounds a little deeper and not louder.

The best part is that with my TST set to defuel at 1350 EGT pre turbo I used to hit that easily with my stock turbo. So far I have only seen 1150 EGT's pre turbo and 50 psi boost.

I want to send a SUPER thanks to Shane, Brett, and Brady at Industrial Injection for thier time on the phone listening to me over and over- being worried if this was the right move to make based on what I do with my truck.

I started out on the sps 66 kick and switched to the sps 62 kick after talking and really thinking about how I would use my truck as a daily driver but an occasional drag race at the stop light.

Simply two words to describe ths sps 62 " It Rocks !! "

Just finished the install of my sps 62 over the weekend. What is sad is that I do not know what my boost is b/c this thing slap pegs my 35psi gauge.

Time to get that 60# gauge, now ain't it? :-laf

Took it for a late night test spin, just couldn't help myself. I had to try it out again. It ran great with the PS62 but now with the SPS62 it just runs even better. Sounds a bit nastier too.

GShail-

So how did it do towing your heavy loads? Enquiring minds need to know!

-Thanks!-

Allright guys, sorry I am a bit tardy on posting my results towing. A logistical snag had me leaving town late Friday instead of Wednesday and I just got back this morning from Southern California at 4:00 a. m.

So . . . .

Here it is . . .

When I hit that first grade I thought my gauges must be broken.

I was going so fast, and the EGT's were so much lower than what I had come to expect from the old Phat Shaft 62 that it actually made me back off a bit to assess what was happening.

I got back into the throttle and the rpm's and speed jumped right back up to 80 mph, the EGT's stayed down.

I was pretty heavily loaded going down, had a heavier combination of cars than I typically carry. Went down with an 2002 Subaru Outback (curb weight 3,565 lbs)

1972 Jeep Wagoneer (4,760 lbs), 2006 Dodge Magnum SXT AWD ( 4,159 lbs)

Total 11,883 cargo + 6,600 trailer + 7,500 truck = just under 26,000 GCVW (25,983)

This heavy combo felt and towed like it was lighter than a 3 car load of VW Jetta's. With this heavy combo I made the trip which was 646 miles in 10. 5 hours.

My own poor attempts at explaining how great this turbo is will never suffice.

It runs 200 to 300 degrees cooler under load. That is not an exxageration.

It makes the truck so much more forgiving to drive. Before, I really, really tried to pay attention to throttle and grade because I need to go fast, but needed to keep the temps under control. IF you didn't make the correct gear selection or power up at the right time it would be easy to get bogged down, lose RPM, and then get heat trying to get back your speed. Now everything is changed. EVERYTHING! It is like I am driving the truck as it should have always been for the first time. It is no longer neccessary to try to anticipate grade changes with such strict attention. My blood pressure must have dropped off several points. The extra power really did make me less tense over the course of the trip. I have some more to say but have to take off right now.

More later. George

In a nutshell it can be summed up in three words - cooler, faster, stronger.

The backhaul into Utah was a pretty substantial load as well, it included a 2002 VW Jetta Wagon, 2004 Volvo XC90 T6, 02 or maybe 03 Monte Carlo Pace Car. Cleared Cajon pass east of San Bernadino at 72 mph. Could have went a bit quicker were it not for traffic. Crested Halloran Summit just east of Baker, CA at 75 mph.

Another long grade I frequently have to climb is on the Shivwits Paiute Indian Reservation in Utah near the AZ border. Went over that l o n g twisty hill 10 mph faster than ever before!

Fuel efficiency increased from 11. 7 mpg to 12. 0 mpg hand calculated!

That new one sure sounds like a winner George. Getting ready to leave on my maiden voyage with the new trailer in a couple of hours. One question, ain't that Shivwits hill, like, kinda WEST of the I 15 up there and dumps out North of St. George? :-laf

Actually it dumps out just west of St. George. I go though that way all of the time to coordinate with a couple of car finder guys who live on the reservation. This week they were able to come up with an International Panel Wagon that a few old surfer guys I know have been thirsting for. Last month it was a nice 58 Chevy and before that they scored me an old 70 GTX.

Good luck on that maiden voyage. Keep your eyes peeled for old Mopars.

Finally towed with mine!

I helped a friend move a car trailer full of household items as well as 2 cars over the past few days. The weights were nothing like GShail's - more like 14,000 to 15,000 lbs. The road speeds were more like 55 to 65 mph where I was kind of in between 5th and 6th and SURGE territory on the SPS 66. Towing done with TST on timing only, TS MP8 on ~30% - same as previous SPS66 towing settings. The results...

1) as expected - no turbo surge!!!!

2) no constant fuel wasting fogging stream behind me at low boost like I had on the SPS 66. The SPS 62 built boost quicker so the smoke cleared up quicker than the SPS 66

3) lower rpm "grunt" is back - where I was in 6th, but too lazy to go to 5th, yet the truck just pulls through without the shudderin' surge

4) for similar towed weights and speeds the EGT on the SPS62 are about 100* lower than the SPS66 due to the slightly higher generated boost on the SPS62.

Work's just been crazy with our parent company being acquired so no time for dynoing yet... sorry!

Does one have a choice on the exhaust housing on SPS 62?

On mine it was the trademark guts of the SPS 66 (larger turbine shaft and machined exhaust side) that were kept and the compressor side changed. But I suppose they could change the exhaust side too such that only the large turbine shaft was retained.

Anybody have a PS 62 and upgraded to a SPS 62?

I believe GShail mentioned he did earlier in this thread, but it sounded like he actually swapped complete turbos rather than swapping out parts of the PS62.

That turbo is an all time favorite now. It has proven to be the best turbo for all around power and towing. Thanks, Call us if you need some thing. Brady

any more updates??

all time favorite? seems from all the talk that the 66 was the favorite. how'd the sps62 take thatover so quickly? I have been on the fence on which one to get, been leaning toward the 62, esp with surging on the 66. this may almost lock it in for me.

This turbo sounds like a winner! You guys with the 3rd Gen's & the sps62, I was wondering if it was an easy install? Did it bolt right up, or is their some fabbing involved?

It bolted right up on my 2003. The only different thing with mine is that I previously had an HTB2 turbo on it made for the 2nd gens so the downpipe was different on mine (flared end as opposed to the stock flanged end). Industrial Injection then took a housing and machined it for my downpipe. Otherwise the turbo you get will come machined for the stock-type exhaust.

any more updates??

I was out cleaning out my injectors :-laf / playing around on some back roads this morning and my EGT with 100 HP injectors, TST 3x2, and a bit of MP8 pressure, hit 1400* briefly and then dropped to 1200* before I ran out of speedometer. My rail pressure hit ~23,000 psi too. Adding the TST and MP8 (without dynos) on top of what I know the injector dyno to be (375 rwHP), that's about 425 - 450ish rwHP. At this level, the smoke clears up really quick. If I start bumping up the TST, then I'll hit 1500* momentarily though.

Keep in mind I don't tow at these levels! GShail need to chime in again because he tows a lot heavier with BOMBs.

My long term goals is to use this SPS 62 turbo as a base for twins... I know II was working on the pipes when I was last there :D

Got the SPS62 on my 2004 with only a few little problems.

the wastegate is much bigger then the one on the stock 305 motor, and in a different possition.

it interfiers with with block and the motor mount.

I took a bolt out of the mounting bracket for the new wastegate, let it rotate around.

bolted the turbo to the manifold, and then pulled the wastegate back down to put the bolt in (harder then it sounds)

also, MAKE SURE, you put the bottom oil line on, when you have it on the bench,

make sure you have some heater core spare hose around too, you will need a piece that is about 1" longer then the stock one,

that is if you want it to go on the fittings and have the full hose clamp worth to work with when clamping.

all in all, it wasnt bad, the rear most inner bolt was hard to get to. but that was expected.

and we had to ratchet strap the exhaust back about 1. 25" to get the stock elbow in place

(large flange only, i didnt feel like buying a new downpipe to replace the new MBRP that i already had. )

this ended up moving the whole exhaust back dangerously close to the firewall.

(3/4" further back then stock) i have less then a half an inch to spare now.

Also had to "adjust" the transmission dip stick to make that work.

i have been driving it for 2 weeks now, and WOW.

this weekend I was towing for the 1st time, only about 6,000 lbs (about 5,000 less then my normal load)

and i was really impressed. although my transmission was slipping a little.

thats why the DTT stuff was on order, we took the transmission out tonight.

putting it back in tommorrow night.

My Club is doing a Dyno Day this coming Saturday.

So i will be sure to keep you guys informed.

i wish that i would have gotten my hoodie with my turbo like i was supposed to... . cause i would have worn it to the dyno day.

Oo. :D
