Hi All,
Tried to post yesterday but I can't find it today so here goes again. I am looking to get educated about PTO's in general and ones for the Ram in particular. I have some knowledge and experience w/PTO's but need to learn more before spending the money. Following are my comments and questions.
My truck: 95 Ram, 2500 4X4, CLUB CAB, CTD, NV4500HD 5-speed, NV241HD transfer case.
My objective: PTO installed on the transfer case with a pump for hydraulic winch and other toys. PTO driven mechanical drive shaft for belt or shaft driven toys at the rear of the truck.
My comments and questions: From what I know about it, I would need a PTO with an output shaft to the front and to the rear. The pump would mount on the front of the PTO and the drive shaft would run off the rear. The PTO would need reversing capability to run the mechanical drive in two directions. Would it hurt the pump to be run backwards? Would it be better to mount a single gear PTO on the 5-speed to run the hydraulic pump and mount a second one on the transfer case to run the mechanical drive? I think most PTO's are mounted on the transmission. I'd like to go with the transfer case mount so that the output speed can be controlled by gear selection in the transmission. Am I on the right track here?
I do plan to research this also at a couple of local truck supply places that sell this type of equipment. However, I've found this forum to be more informative than the parts places and certainly a lot more Dodge friendly.
As always, all comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
