Today at work a truck driver dropping a trailer in our dock could not get his truck out from under the trailer after he backed in and dropped the legs (whatever they are called). It snowed about 6 inches here today and the dock has a slight decline as you are backing into it. The lot had not been plowed yet at all. There was just no way he was going to get it out. It was a big Volvo, with a sleeper cab. What to do? We needed the trailer, but he couldn't stay til the snow melted. Well, what's a guy with a Cummins gonna do? With everyone watching telling me there was "no way", and saying "oh he thinks his truck is so awesome", I backed up to the big rig with the Dodge, engaged 4 Hi, attached my chain, yanked it out from under the trailer and pulled it up the incline on the first try. Blasted the train horns and taught everyone that a Cummins powered Dodge is a bad ride. Even the truck driver said "you got one powerful truck there". I thanked him for letting me help him and got back to work. Some of this was caught on CCTV but the digital recorder has been acting up and I was not able to burn a copy of it today. Hopefully it will be posted on TDR soon.

I have the exact same story as you, I did it in 2002 with my last truck. I also tried it on the highway with a truck stuck in the median, not so much luck on that one. There is something about hooking a strap to a semi that is just so much fun.

Yeeeee Hawww,

Blasted the train horns - That's funny !

Why 4Hi instead of 4Lo ?... . Momentum I guess..... hope that strap was springy !

Darn it anyways.

There was a stuck semi truck a couple weeks ago by my house and I was going to try and tug him out but I was running short on time.

Next time I will have to try when the occasion comes up.

Good going. CTD is the way to go.

Pulling a truck tractor is one thing, the tractor and trailer is a whole 'nother story. My Pete 379 tractor weighs in at about 17,800, a decent load for a Cummins powered Dodge, but nowhere near impossible. Now, with my trailer fully loaded to it's gross weight of 98,120 plus the tractor, well...

With no weight on the drivers, it's pretty hard to get traction with a semi tractor, hence the guy's trouble at getting up the snowy incline without the trailer.

Good job pulling him out! I like the train horn touch!

I'd like to see a Powerjoke try that and fall on his face!!
So would I but the realist in me thinks my lil bro's 1/2ton chevy could have gotten the job done.

Good story though, JDiepstra. Beats the heck outta my getting stuck story for today. Got one tractor stuck in 1" of snow (on top of ice) and had to use the FWA loader tractor to yank it out... by myself. See, I told you yours was better.

Cattletrkr, it sounds like that would have been a fun thing to do as long as it wasn't getting in your way of getting work done. I don't ever get to play on loaders!

Sweet, its cool when you get to do stuff like that, I wonder what engine is under the hood of that Volvo?
There's a good chance the Volvo had a CTD, wasn't he able to engage the tandems (4X4, but with out the front). The Freightliner I drove, you could lock it into 4WD when traction was bad.

Steve...

Well, you can usually lock the inter-axle disconnect, then you are pulling with both axles (assuming it was a tandem tractor). But, most trucks have open diffs, so it's only a little help, and without the trailer weight, trying to push that heavy nose up a snow slick incline, it's REAL easy to get spinning. BTDT.

I may be wrong but the newer Volvo's are Volvo engine only, no option on different motors.

I don't know what he had under that hood. I'll check if I see that truck again. That poor guy, I knew he would get stuck before he even backed in. Let's just say I had my keys in hand and chains out of my tool box before he even knew he was stuck.

I have seen videos of a couple of powerstrokes pulling tractors and trailers in the snow... (Diesel Stop) Really it is all about momentum... Doesn't matter is was a Cummins, Stroker, or Duramax... .

Momentum, weight, traction and gearing...

I've got a wimpy little 4x4 diesel rig that only puts out 105 HP that I'd put up against any diesel pickup regardless of brand, engine, or horsepower. It weighs 18,000 lbs and says John Deere on the side...

Moved two loaded railroad cars once - - It was level track, so no problem - - when I got the chain out to hook 'em up the guys hoora'ed me - - said I'd been watching to many Dodge Commercials and I would never get 'em rolling - - I had the last laugh and they didn't have to carry a bunch of equipment 300 feet

We had to be real careful getting 'em stopped with the hand brakes tho.

Good job, I actually got my truck stuck in mud plowing at my own house last winter, up to the bottoms of the front hubs. How'd I get it out? Went and got the Kubota out of the Cover it. I didn't even need help just put the truck in neutral and the tractor in low and 1st and pulled the truck right out.

I need to put an airhorn on my truck!

I pulled a 1 ton durmax with a load of cows out of the ditch he managed to stick himself in. No problems and the guy swore up and down I wasnt stock. He couldnt believe how easy I pulled his truck, trailer and cattle up out of the ditch and on the raod. I told him "Next time your buy a truck, get a real one".
