When I was transporting RVs I usually ran about 62 in IL and CA and never had a problem. 55 is a very bad speed with my gearing when loaded. I can't believe they would pull over a private 1 ton pickup.

"These kinds of laws are rediculous when they are applied to private non-commercial vehicles. "

They are ridiculous AND unsafe when applied to commercial vehicles, too.

Anytime you deliberately induce a significant speed differential between vehicles, you have just disrupted the smooth flow of traffic.

I agree 100%. I drove over the road for many years and ran Illinois quite a bit. I always kept it down to 62 or so without problem, but the split speed limit was just plain dangerous, and I've said so for years.

I run mostly local now, MN, WI, SD, and IA, haven't been in IL in the last year but it nice to hear that the law has finally been changed. OH has the same idiotic law, and I seriously doubt that they will ever see the light over there.

Rant off...

You'll be glad to know that OH changed their law last summer. I think it was July. When I cruised through with my RV in August, I was pleasantly surprised to see the change.

It would seem to be "just plain dangerous" but the numbers don't show it. Many states have split limits that I drive in and I have never seen a wreck that could be blamed on the differing speeds of different vehicles. I spend a lot of time in OR, CA, and TX which all have split limits. I have also driven many miles in IL and OH. There is the intermittant congestion but even with states that don't have split limits like AZ there is intermittant congestion. The reason is that everyone doesn't drive the same speed even if the limit is 75. When I have a trailer hooked up I keep my speed at about 62, that is my sweet spot for mileage. I sometimes pass trucks in AZ:eek: I'll agree that 55 or 60 is a money making deal for the state, but there is no evidence that split speed limits are unsafe.

The other a day a friend of ours dropped some barn tin off at our farm. He was pulling a 24' single wheel two axle trailer 14000 gvw empty back home. He got stopped by the highway patrol and wrote a ticket for no CDL. The trooper told him if he was pulling the trailer with a 3/4 ton truck instead of his dually he would not of needed a CDL.

So after your friend got the ticket was he allowed to go on down the road?
