Anybody who's ever tried to pull T-posts out of the ground knows how hard it can be. I just discovered a new way to do it. Tie onto 'em at ground level with a tow strap, put the Turbo-Diesel in 4WD and ease forward in 1st gear. The low-end torque sucks 'em right out and the engine and 7500 lb truck didn't even know it happened! Sure beats doin' it the hard way. Now if I could just find a way to stick 'em in that easy ...

If you tie a chain around the base of the post, then use a 4x6 about 2-feet long, run the chain over the top of the timber, lean it against the post, and hook the other end to your truck. The post will pull straight up with no damage

NOW you tell me! But that's O. K. , I'm just happy to get these suckers outta the ground. Last time I pulled 'em the hard way too - rockin' em and pullin', pullin' and rockin'. Hard on the back.
But I'll remember the timber idea, I guarantee!
Buried T-posts
These T-posts had been driven deep and had gone through several winters, so they and the ground, which in Colorado is decomposed granite, thought they belonged to each other.
I let the clutch out and the Cummins idled forward in 1st like it allus does. I never even felt it when the tow strap sucked those guys outta the ground. But I can see the value of the timber, sure can. My old T-posts got a little "kink" in 'em now.
I ain't never drivin' no other kind of truck. 'Course, I said that 40,000 miles ago when I took delivery of this puppy, so ain't nothing much changed about that.

I use an old truck wheel rolled up to the post to form a pulley for the chain to go from verticle to horizontal. The wider the wheel, the less chance it will fall on its side.
Raised on ranch/farm
You guys who're raised on a ranch or farm got all this stuff figgered out. I was raised on a farm in Southern Arkansas but that was before Turbo Diesels. Before lots of other stuff too, although we knew what diesel engines were.
I remember what it's like to look at the sun comin' up through the ears of a mule pullin' a plow. I know how grateful I was for a tiny breeze blowin' in the middle of the day. We used the mule for pullin' stuff around, too, although the mule didn't have much torque.
An engineer might say the mule didn't have any torque, only pullin' power - which is true - but we got by just the same.
I'll bet there's an engineer on this forum who can comment about pullin' T-posts using a wheel or a 2-foot 4 x 6 timber - he might even say somethin' about an arm and a moment and maybe even a fulcrum.

Just one of those T-post pullers that the feed stores sell work as simple and easy as any thing I ever seen.

I kinda figgered there might be something out there. Especially if a feller's got a bunch to pull. I had 'em up and down the driveway so I'd know where the edges are during the winter. But that didn't work because the snow gets deeper than the T-posts and I kept running into 'em when I least expected it. Better to pull 'em up and guess where the driveway is until I get it plowed.

This is the perfect thread to talk about that ford powerstroke commercila where this big tough Ford Man is shown Hammerring a regular fence post in the groung with a big maul. what an idiot. It wasnt a T post which would have still been stupid but maybe doable, it was a regular wooden fence post
No boom pole
Don't got a tractor but my neighbor has a truck w/a boom on the back. I asked him about it and he said the T-post would come out in a hurry, causing the boom and cable to fly up. He said he'd rather not do it. I went with what I had on hand, which was my truck. Worked like a charm, unless, of course, I want to use the T-posts again. Then I'd have to straighten 'em out a little. I like the suggestion of using the 2 x 6 timber. In fact, if I wasn't so old I'd put one back in the ground just so I could pull it out again!

i'm a rn in a rural wv hospital in the O. R. ... .
we had an old farmer in last week who was pullin' posts out with a 4x4 against the post and the rope snapped off the 4x4 and darn near cut off his thumb (he was holding the 4x4)

Jeeze laweez!, that farmer was kinda lucky in a way, he was fixen' to make one big ol' sling shot with that rope, or a bow&arrow. I don't know if he was using a pickup to pull with or a tractor, but the driver was about to get shot off the seat and didn't know it!! Reminds me of all the dumb things I have done over the years
