what would be the best gears to pull with, runnin 315's, and lots of power

I was wondering this also. I'm in the process of building a pulling truck and I think I'm going to try my 3. 54's. My thinking is that with a diesel we have plenty of torque to get started but we lack top end like a big gasser. So with a high gear like this, a tall tire like yours, or the 35" boggers I'll be using and 4000rpm's we should have good wheel speed to keep the sled going... 300ft hopefully. Anybody please let me know if this will work as planned, and what gear do you use in a manual transmission to start, and low or high in the transfer case. Thanks for any input... ...

3rd gear low range for the guys/gals with manuals...



Put it in drive/low range and stab it for the guys with slushboxes...

i currently have 3. 54s with 315s, and i thought about dumping in 4. 56s to get more rpm's. But maybe it would be better to have the higher gears. But I'm only turnin stock rpms,(3,200)

I have a 6 Speed

With 4:10 Gears



And use either 2nd High Range, 4th Low Range,or 5th Low Range.



My 4th Low Range is the slowest of the gears 2nd High Range is the next fastest, and 5 Low Range is the fastest of them all.







What I would do is take your truck out one night on a back road where there is no traffic and see what you are running MPH wise @ 3000 RPM and try all your gears to keep the speed around 22-26 MPH @ 3000 RPM. I would say to go high gears if you have a pulling type clutch but a sigle plate clutch might have a holding problem.



I Run the 6 speed and 4:10 gears with a Mitchell Dual Disc Clutch and this is what I have come up with for me.



Just ask before you pull if there is a 75' or a 50' rule so if you think you are not going to be able to pull in the gear selected then if you let out of it by the footage required then you will be able to go back and try it again in a lower gear. Now if you feel it was too easy then use the same rule but go back and try a little higher gear.



I hope all this helps in some way. There are others on this board that might have to disagree with me but this is what I do and it is working so far.
