DRB II to actaute lift pump

Oil Change?

My '03 now has 70k miles on it & reading about lift pump failures has me a little concerned about road trips, of which I do a fair amount. I'm planning a trip to Lubbock, Tx in March from Atlanta & don't want to sit on the side of the road somewhere.

You guys that have installed FASS systems or just plain pusher pumps, do you leave the stock lift pump in line? If the lift pump does fail, can the pusher pump still deliver adequate fuel through a dead lift pump?

I am thinking of installing a Holley pusher pump. Any comments?

Thanks.

Got HO,

My buddy's 01. 5 lift pump failed again about two months ago. The dealer installed the "new" system in his tank, just like my 05 has. They completely removed the old lift pump from the side of his engine.

I haven't seen many threads with failures of the "in-tank" system, but I didn't do a full search for it either.

Pusher pump

Got HO, I am considering the FASS, or posiibly building my own. I believe you can leave the stock lift pump in place to be used as a spare, although you can't push fuel through it. I also think the CP-3 will pull fuel through the FASS if it goes out, although at a reduced pressure, whereas the stock dead lift pump becomes an obstruction. Maybe someone will chime in here to help us out.

I have a Holley Blue plumbed inline with my stock lift pump I have around 22. 5 @ idle and can't pull it down below 15 with the TST on 9/9 and the VA on 100% I don't know what will happen if one of the pumps dies but I can bypass the Blue if it dies. I am considering removing the Factory one but I am still looking for the fitting for the filter housing.

Does the FASS system include plumbing to bypass the lift pump or do you run it in line? I can defuel already with just the TST & it seems some days are worse than others so I think the lift pump isn't too consistent in volume. I change fuel filters every 10k miles, and except for the first one which looked very black, the filters always look pretty good.

Anyone else make a FASS type kit?

I would consider either a Holley Blue plumed in like Scotty does, he has a nice kit for that.

OR

To retrofit to the new in tank pump.

The Holley Blue is easy to find if it fails and the in tank pump can be found at any Dodge dealer since all the 3rd gens use them now.

If you do 2 pumps and one quits your dead anyway cuz a good pump wont flow through a dead one.

Thanks Matt.

Yo!! Scotty!!

Please pm me. I want info on your kit... ... .....

(I guess I could try to get a spare engine mounted pump from Cummins too. Sounds a lot easier to replace on the road than the in-tank pump :) )

IMO FASS is way overpriced, just go to jegs or summit and get either a Carter or a Holley, or something similar. Both are around $100. 00 where FASS is around 500. 00 to 600. 00. Is FASS better?... probably but is it $500. 00 better? doubt it.

Not all 3rd gen pumps are the same... ... ... I know the 06 is not ;)

BD-Power makes one that they have in their LP kits and so does DPP on the fass. You may be able to cotact them and see if you can get just the adapter/fitting to the filter housing.

Isn't a possibility to get just the adapter from dodge? The same one that would be packaged with the intank LP replacement kit?

I am all ears. . whats new about the 06?

Physical difference, not interchangeable,I havent checked pressures yet. The pump itself still looks the same. The module is different.

The factory adapter is not available separately at this time. It was early on.

Diesel Dynamics also has one.

So what happens if you have an 05 or an 06 and the adapter cracks and leaks? Dodge won't sell you one? Or did they change the design of the filter bowl where the line would attach?

Airdog is the most similar to the FASS.

I have a FASS and it works great... over 7k already with no problems. The FASS is a complete bypass system... it replaces ALL the factory plumbing from the tank outlet to the CP3 inlet.

Stevd,

thanks for the info. I assume that this also bypasses the fuel heater? If so, is a heater part of the FASS kit?

The FASS heater is coolant driven... not easy to hook up on the Ram. It does bypass the factory heater.

I will say this: I was concerned about running the FASS without a heater... then I thought about this... your fuel tank isn't heated when the truck is sitting outside in the cold... the only thing the fuel heater actually does is prevent the filter from waxing. I drove about 300 miles in -5*F weather without issues using Howe's Antigel/lubricant.

I am going to eventually install a "pad" heater on the screen/water separator since it doesn't get changed very often... I already got a 80 watt pad heater... but if I would have seen the 150 they now sell I would have bought that instead.

I am also going to experiment with making a heater out of some glow plugs... How this would work is I would run the fuel that the FASS returns to the tank into my "heater", then into the coolant passages of the FASS, then into the tank... the heated fuel would heat the FASS and heat the fuel in the tank in one loop... but this is down the road.

All in all, I prefer running an additive than running an electric heater because I run it any way to get additional lubrication to the injection pump... and I really don't worry about running the FASS without a heater.

steved,

Hi, Where do you get these heating Pads? Are they 12 volt i assume? Thanks for any info or links? Marv in seattle
