Anybody here have any problems unbolting a turbo that has been on for 200k miles? The TST and Dieselpage guide both show the turbo off (easy for them). I'm dubious that thing is just going to come off #@$%! . I did read about somebody who just drilled while the engine was running. Which sounded great but I am more worried about something coming loose when I run the tap and thread it.



Any ideas?
 
If you go to pull the turbo most likely you will need a torch to heat up the nuts so they will come off.



When I drilled mine I used a shop vac while drilling and taping. Then I used a long handled magnet and picked the rest of the metal out. Many of us have done it this way.
 
With engine off and turbo mounted...



1. Mark the area on the manifold where you intend to drill,

2. Center punch your mark,

3. Use a small drill bit (<1/8th) & dip it in grease,

4. Drill small pilot hole,

5. Now do the same thing again with the correct size bit for tapping your hole,

6. Use plenty of grease, wipe often & re-grease to your comfort level,

7. Now tap your hole again using plenty of grease.



When finished look down the hole to see if you left anything behind :eek: One time I dropped a ball of grease w/fillings down the hole... :--) just used a small flat tipped screwdriver, stuck it down the hole and stabbed the grease ball, then carefully lifted it out the hole. Oo.
 
The only thing I would add to the above is to use a small pencil magnet to fish around inside the hole to get everthing you can.

I've done a few that way and never had a problem.

I just pulled apart a turbo with 309K miles on it. A little heat to warm the bolts and they loosened up. I tapped on the exhaust housing and it soon began to separate from the bearing center section. I want to save the 18. 5 housing so I'm taking it apart.

Yep as said above, grease, drill, fish , repeat- grease, drill fish. Do this often and you shouldn't have any issues. I figure with a low mileage engine you have (200k) I'd just remove the turbo, then drill. Would take the same time either way.

I have drilled and tapped several, pre turbo, with the engine running around 1500 rpm. I know it sounds shaky, but it was suggested by M & W Gear(aftermarket turbos for farm tractors) in the instructions for installing their pyrometer on a farm tractor. Wear a face shield and dirty clothes, it blows all the chips out in your face. I don't know their reasoning or logic, but I have had excellent results with their method.



Magnets and grease work, but if I were going to do one with the engine off, I

would duct tape a shop vac hose close to the work to pull the chips out, then

double check with a magnet.

Sorry, my bad, I didn't read carefully. You are asking about removing the turbo from the engine.



I figured you had inquired about the removal of the turbine housing (from the center bearing section) as that is the challange most face as opposed to removal from the engine.
