Question for Amateur Radio Operators...

I would like to obtain information on how to obtain a Ham Radio License. I am looking into this as I would like to aquire my father's call sign. He has a real old license number as he has had it since the late 30's. Part of this is to pass the minimum test requirements to have him tranfer it to me as soon as possible. It is more of a legacy to do this.



I would like to find out how the soonest way to make this happen. My dad is in his 90's; he has not been active for years although he keeps his lisence current. I know it would sure do his heart proud to see one of his own retain the call sign. I could then become more accomplished after inheriting his legacy.

Im not a ham operator but am looking into becoming one myself.

From what I understand from a friend that is one, they have made it easier to get a license.

Check out the ARRL website.

As for transfering your dads callsign, I think you would have to contact FCC for that.

I hope you have more luck than my dad did with his last renewal.

After talking to them on the phone, and covering up the old addy with the new one, the FCC still sent it to his old address.

After several calls to try to recitfy this, he finally gave up.

So, it's renewed, but in an old addy where he no longer resides.

He has one of the old "WA" call signs, but he's not an "advanced", he's a general class. He got his in the 70's.

You can now get your ham license much easier than when your father did. He had to pass a test where the had to do so many words a minute in morse code. You no longer have to do that. It is much like your recreational license for flying. Get a hold of the local Ham organization in your area. They most likely put it on once a month or quarter for beginners like us. The ham outfit up here does it once a month at the library on the third Thursday of each month. Hope this helps.
