Question for users of Howes Fuel Treatment

Any users of the RB Howes products?? What product are you using? It appears that they have at least two different products available. I am using the Howes Lubricator® Diesel Treat Anti-Gel Summer/Winter product. Has anybody used the Howes Lubricator® Meaner Power Kleaner®?

I assume the product I am using would be the best for a regular additive. What ratio are you adding at? The jug indicates small diesels are to run at double dosage. I have been adding at the rate of 1 oz per 4 gal. (single doseage)

Any comments welcome.

I am running the Meaner Power Cleaner. It says on my quart to add 8oz to 60gal. So I add 4oz to each 35 gal tank.

I'm also using the Meaner Power Kleaner. I like this stuff! The engine runs so much smoother... it's really noticeable if I forget to add it in. Since the bottle is very concentrated,I put in 4oz at fill ups.

Well add another to the list of Howe's users. I've been using the Meaner Kleener since 3000 miles..... now have 13,000 on the odometer. I agree 100% on the smoother operation of the engine... . BIG difference. With all the concerns over pump lubrication, I'll take all the help I can get.

Guys,

Where are you sourcing the Howes Lubricator® Meaner Power Kleaner® from? I have only found one source for the Howes product I am using, and did not see the Howes Lubricator® Meaner Power Kleaner® there. I found this at a truck stop. It does not appear that the Wal-Mart type stores or automotive stores carry Howes at all around here. Maybe worth going back to the truck stop and asking, when my current 1/2 gallon is gone.

Where do you buy this product?
I've been using Lubridiesel. I "think" it's been good. Don't really have a reference to gauge it, however.

You should be able to find Howes products at any truck stop.

I also prefer the Howes brand of conditioners. My father has been using their products for years in his tractor trailers, and has nothing to say but good things about them. This is the only conditioner used in my 98. 5 since new, every fuel-up it gets a splash! Any high volume diesel station or truck stop will have it, as most truckers prefer it.

Teacher and Shelby,
I get the Howes treatment at the closest truck stop to me called Ernie's Fuel Stop,and I've seen it at just about every other truck stop as well. It costs $9 bucks for a 24oz bottle.
Like I said,I use 4oz at fillups,which I usually go 500-550mi between fillups... that means I get a little over 3000mi use out of one bottle. This stuff goes a long way.

I have been using Howes Lubricator, Diesel Treat, Anti-Gel (P/N: 103060) for about 3 months. I too had a question regarding the mixing ratios stated on the bottle. I contacted Howes and was told that our Dodge Cummins do not require “double dose”. I also questioned the anti-gel protection guarantee. “You must use a minimum of six ½ gallons of Howes Diesel Treat prior to making any claim”. Based on 10K miles/year, it would take 2. 5 years (using the winter ratio) to use six ½ gallon bottles of Howes.
I last spoke with Howes on 11-27-00 and was told they would get something in writing to me in a few days.
I will keep everyone updated.

Just started using Pro-Tec Conditioner, see this forum for the results. Will be doing a trip with over a 1000 miles this week so will se what the mileage is and then recheck for smoke.

Hello, out there(new user)
A short story about Howes.
My 96 was smoking badly, I went to a local authorized Bosch rebuilder and asked what may be the problem, taking into account the mods. (JRE, ect. ) and he told me the pump and injectors needed to be rebuilt at a cost of two thousand dollars! He told me that they should be rebuilt every 50k miles!As I picked myself up off the floor he sold me some Stanadyne treatment and sent me on my way. The Stanadyne did a little to stop the smoking, which was on throttle tip in and wide open. Then a friend gave me some Howes, both the cleaner and the lubricator WOW ! I swear in the first 15 min. the truck smoothed out and by the second tank/treatment the smoke went down to nothing (well almost)I did use more than the lable said but, I've run about 6 tanks of fuel through and still very little smoke. I just bought a couple of bottles last night and will continue to run this stuff.

I'm glad this topic came up. My father-in-law says he uses Siloo treatment in his truck and all of his tractors and farm equipment. He told me that he has never had any problems. Does anyone have any knowledge about Siloo?

As “suggested” by Howes it seems that our fuel additive cost has just doubled #ad
Howes sent me this e-mail clarifing mixing ratios and guarantees.

Thank you for your inquir(ies) on Howes Diesel Treat. We apologize for any confusion in our suggested mixing ratios or guarantees in our recent correspondence. I will do my best to simplify and clarify the matter. Our suggested winter treatment ratio for cars and pickups is an initial triple dose ( 1. 3 oz. per gal. ) for 3 tankfuls. Then a continuous double dose ( 1oz. per 2 gal. ) thereafter. This should insure trouble free fuel performance provided the fuel is fresh and of good quality.
The reason we suggest a higher dose for cars and smaller trucks is not the nature of the fuel, but the design of the vehicle. Class 8 Trucks generally have larger fuel systems including; filters, tanks, and fuel lines. Anti-gel products perform best when the fuel cools slowly. Sudden temperature drops common in winter, place a greater burden on these chemicals to perform properly. In a smaller vehicle with a 35 gallon tank, fuel temperatures will drop faster than in say a 150 gallon tank. Smaller fuel lines and filter elements add to the burden. For this reason we suggest the double dose.
As for our guarantee against gelling. Any customer showing proof of steady usage prior to a gelling incident is covered. Purchasing a full case is one way to do that. We generally do not scrutinize claims, we are only trying to help insure trouble free driving for our customers. By buying and using the product prior to the onset of cold weather, it helps eliminate
contaminants such as water and sediment in the fuel.

Some interesting reading from Howes. Since fuel doesn't gell here in my neck of the woods,I wasn't after the product for gelling like you guys are in the northeast. I'm only after the added lubrication in my fuel system,so I'll stay with my mix ratio.
