I have owned Dodge Cummins since 1991, currently own a 2005. I always let the engine run for a couple of minutes before shutting down, even more if I have been pulling long and hard. I thought I read something about the new engines cooling the turbo down by a sensor now that the turbo is water cooled... Thanks in advance as always!

I too would like to know the answer to this question.

Issue 53 of the TDR (Aug, Sept, Oct, 2006) Page 34, article by Joe Donnelly, indicates the new engine will have a cool down feature. My brother-in-law-a long time brand F guy just bought a new 3500 with the 6. 7 engine and has asked about cool down times. Apologize if this has been discussed or is covered in the Owners Manual. I spend all my time at the 5. 9 forum since my truck is an 05. Thanks in advance for any responses.

My practice is to wait for the engine to cool down to 400 degrees or less before turning off the engine. The most I have had to wait for this to occur is 20 seconds. I don't haul or tow heavy loads so times may be different for others.

I'm not aware of any sensor that cools the turbo down. There isn't a turbo timer that keeps the engine running after the key has been removed.

The manual does say to wait a few minutes. I too always wait until at least 400 degrees, however its hard when the truck is in regen because it will just sit there and not cool down. So like most of us we have a life and things to do I shut the truck off and get on with my daily duties.

I wanted to bring this up again. I thought read where the 6. 7ltr had a cool down feature or something to that effect. If anyone has any new info that would be great.

I recently installed Painless Performance's Striker Turbo Timer on my truck to automate this process. It automatically shuts the truck down after a set period of time adjustable from 0-5minutes.

when I flew helicopters in the army, we had a 2 minute shut-down on the turbine engines. I now work for fedex and when I jump-seated on co a/c I noticed that fedex has the same practice. My wife has a 1991 toyota mr2 turbo that had to be replaced because she did not follow toyota's recommendation of a 30sec - 2min cool-down before shutting the engine off. I always drive slow the last couple of miles before getting to home or work, if I'm doing interstate driving I do a 2 minute idle before shutting down. YMMV
