So I was sitting on a dyno the other day strapped down and ready to go... ... ...

however... . since I had never been on a dyno I didn't ask the proper questions about what I needed. And since he had never dyno'd a diesel he had some assumptions. This is what I now call the "newbie vs. newbie" scenario.

OK so he needs me to hit 3k rpm. I had no tach. Also didn't know how much I weighed in at.

OK I have tach Autometer 2888. Not the one I wanted but the one I could get the next day so I can dyno this Wednesday. Now that looks improbable.

So here we go. Can the 2888 be used on a 1992, is there that connector under the dash? Or am I better off using the alternator probe and getting it calibrated by a diesel tech somewhere? That seems to be the professional call, but does anybody know of somebody w/in an hour or so of NYC.

from what I have read we max out around 2450 with the governor... yes or no?

We need a "dyno'ing for dummies" FAQ or forum

Mine had the connector underneath the dash, i don't know about your tach working or not. If you have all the right parts it should only take you about an hour or so to have the tach hooked up and mounted. Good luck

So why did he ask you to hit 3K? What did it matter what you weighed in at? Weight would be irrelevant for dynoing and you don't normally hit a specific RPM while dynoing. Once the dyno is calibrated to your truck, you just get on it till you let off. If he was asking you to hit 3K to calibrate, you might want to find someone that understands diesels a little better since that is higher than you will reach unless you have the 3200rpm gov spring installed and it is near the top end if you do.

what he told me is this.

dyno for HP and then a 1/4 run. So he said he needs weight and 3k to have a point of reference.

This guy had a really hopped up chevelle and I thought he was going to break the straps on his 1/4 run... ... ... .

Your dyno guy needs to stop thinking like a gasser. A hopped up chevelle is alot different than a Cummins! Unless you have the gov spring, you most likely will never hit 3K to give him a reference. When I've dynoed, They've asked me to set at 1500 for reference and I can run up to 3400.

And a 1/4 run is a long time to get on it for a dyno run. Just my $0. 02.

well with me not knowing what questions to ask and him knowing even less.....

after you dyno for hp I think in 4th gear..... you come to a complete stop, get the computer ready and then bang through all your gears like you would at the dragstrip or the getting on the NJ Turnpike.

When I go this week I'll find out the make and model of the dyno. Although it has been kinda humorous. Me and then a bunch of drop dead gorgeous 50's and 60's cars. I'll need some coconut oil to mix in with the fuel so I can smell like a giant car air freshener.

I have a hand held optical tach we can calibrate yours with... . but I'm about 2 hours north of NYC... in N W Ct.

It sounds like you going to get on an inertia dyno, I would look for another shop that has a dyno that can load the truck. I would also find one that knows and has run Diesels before :) You may be surprised at the numbers you get from this shop... .....

this dyno shows up every Wednesday night up at Bear mountain for the cruise nights. So it has the novelty of being pretty convienient (an hour). Since I want to dyno this thing after every mod. Its been a pain trying find a dyno that isn't 3 time zones away. I wish we had a list of dynos.

Mr Leonard I'll take you up on that. Let me install it and I'll pm and find out when its convienent for you.
