Eagle Eye,

We are both on the same quest! I too have been hitting my head against the wall trying to get into the ECM and do my own rewrites. Noone will give up the information, it seems. I'm not here to try to make money either, just be able to "play" with my truck as I see fit.

I also sent you a private email.

Thanks!!

Carl and Big, have you looked at BB electric. thier page has j1939 to rs232 adapters they also have j1708 and J1587 and all the cables for in between. this is where i got the auto tap software and i thought if i got the adapter from BB then it would work on the auto tap, since they make both.

I emailed the powerstore and there reply was that you have to get the insite software from a dealer (cummins). cnat get it on the web.

I want this software, i want to make my PTO work the way it should. (through the Cruise and/or with a remote switch) and i would like to remove the road speed govenor.

lets put our heads together and get this working for the gang.

email me with what works and doesnt work and we can devide up our tasks and all three work as one to get this going. :D

Carl and Eagle, i just went back to the BB site and they have a converter and software for it for $249 it is a rs232 to SEA 1939 adapter. this and a cable should get us into these ECM's.

go look at it and see.

go to bb-elec.com , products, converters, page down to rs232 to sea1939. there is a manual and setup. exe you can download.

i printing as i type this and then i will install the setup file and look at it. :D

update:

I think this will get us in, it uses a visual basic program to view, and send messages to the converter, and you can"log" messages, to store to a file.

next thing is to get the code, cummins uses.

Eagle, have you looked at this one yet?

What can you do with the INLINE II and Cummins software?

Everything. :D Reflash too.

Added benefit of the INLINE II is that it can be used with either SAE protocol. Versatility is great.

Still Checking Options

Well, I am still tracking down leads for J1939(CAN) interface. I'm trying to stay away from the Cummins setup because the inline adapter and cables are PRICEY!!!

I looked into the QuickCheckII electronics and am tracing out the chips. I am looking into a way to use the QCII interface to a computer. ALOT cheaper this way, because I already paid for the QCII. The chip looks to be a standard CAN setup... let me try this one...

If that doesn't pan out, I am also checking into AutoTap's version, but I fear that the interface will be the slower CAN protocol. It is the cheapest out there, but... may not work/be compatible!

Tracking it DOWN!!!

This will work... eventually!!! :D

Eagle eye, the converter on BB's site has 250kbps on the j1939 side and supports 9600 19. 2 38. 4 and 56. 7kbps on the rs232 side.

I think this converter along with the proper cable to the ECM will get us in. have you looked at these.

I sent them an email, and asked about custom software also. I told them I wanted something similar to the Auto Tap but more product specific for the Cummins ECM.

If someone could get the hands on a copy of the inline II software I'm sure we could figure out the rest. (hint hint)

The cabling from the J1939 converter to the datalink connector under the hood will be the easy part. The connector is labeled A,B,C, which corresponds to the signal: CAN-High,CAN-Ground,CAN-Low. I suspect the converter from B&B will work, but the key is what software will work with it. If the free POWERSPEC software will work with it, then we are on the way to an affordable solution. I believe the software can be modified to include other parameters.

Carl i havent tried yet today but all day yesterday i ouldnt get to that site, for powerspec. i think the server is down.

I think i will order one of these converters and see what i come up with. maybe we can make some clones and share the wealth a little. :D

Still workin...

BigCarl64 is RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!! I have found the cableing issue is a non issue. The AutoTap interface may be J1939 compliant, but will it work with Cummins stuff? That is the $265. 00 question.

I will be home tonight and going over the reams of paperwork that I'm accumulating on CAN, J1939, OBDII, Cummins, Insite, QCII, Palm, etc. and start into the experimental stage.

If my Palm idea works out for testing... may be a viable option for an interface. Best of both worlds! :D

Before dropping the money... lets bang some heads together.

Lots of work tonight!

Man... feels like I'm cramming a crash course in CAN protocol networking AND J1939. I will be testing some theories tonight on the laptop and hopefully will be better able to tell what works and what doesn't.

At least it will eliminate some possibilities if unsucessful.

Evan, I will be sending ya an e-mail soon, got a couple of questions re: insite

I should be around all day, but if I disappear for a day or so, you know I'm reloading my operating system on my computer. Its about time to 'clean house' on this end.

Keep me posted, and I'm also throwing around the idea of starting a new thread when this thing is feasable/works. Till then, should we keep it in this one?

Feedback MORE than welcome!!! :D :D :D

I can't handle the pressure!

What did you find out???

I've started drilling down on the QCII/RR4 stuff, looks like you guys are way ahead of me! More input <begging - pahleeeze>!

I'm drooling at the possibility of real-time bombing my DemonDodge using my laptop! ha ha

Thanks!

Chris

Ok I have a PalmVIIx and QCII and am looking at the same things as you. That would be so nice if I could tell my truck how to run!!! :D

Watching for more info

So let me get this right....

I just now stumbled on to this thread.

The inline II is $1,600, is there a way to get the Cummins software?

For what it is worth, I have a suggestion on a different approach to solving your problem. As a computer systems and software engineer for 36 years, I have had to tackle more difficult jobs than this, and succeeded, but I don't have time for this one, even though I would very much like to interface my laptop.

DC has had numerous layoffs this year. There has to be some software engineers that have been fired that know this stuff in their head. The problem is, the software designed to code the computer modules is probably either copyrighted or considered a trade secret, or both. It even most likely has patents applied for. Therefore, unless someone is willing to spend huge bucks to get a license from DC, you probably won't find it published.

Find the layed off software engineer who drives a turbo diesel and has the knowledge in his head. Get him to help solve the problem with out making it a commercial venture (pure hobby) and without violating any confedentiality aggreements he has signed with DC. In my opinion, we own our vehicles, and should own the data that is generated within the computer by our vehicles. We just don't own the software that is running, only the license to use it, just like buying a software pkg. for your computer. I would not expect that he would be violating any agreements so long as he only helps develop a solution to retrieve the data in a real time mode without divulging the contents of the code that is creating the data.

If anyone wants more suggestions on this, post it here and I will respond.

Not that it never worked...

Just havn't had the time to do the serious crunching involved.

This thing is FAR from being over. Got a plan, just gotta find the time to do it and implement.

Not dead by a LONGSHOT.

Shoot, havn't seen this thread in awhile, but I planned on posting a new one when I get something together here...

It still LINGERS HEAVILY in the back of my mind...

And it WILL come... :D :D :D

Yogi

it is the rate of fuel being burned per hour as in Gallons per Hour. And No it doesn't read pressure (shucks).

This also brings this to the top for ?????

SOTSU!!
