thanks to all the helpful info that you'll have shared with me. it seems that there are alot of man. trans, anyone have any recommendations on which oil is best for a automatic trans?

ATF+4 (which is synthetic) is the only approved fluid for the 48re along with other DC trannies. DC released in Sep. that other oil companies can start producing the ATF+4 spec transmission fluids.

All Amsoil did was add modifiers to to meet the standard of ATF+4.

Until DC acknowledges what transmission fluids are compatible, if anything other than Mopar ATF+4 is used, your warranty is voided.

ATF+3 is not compatible.

I had a transmission replaced under the 7/70 warranty on my previous '03 QC HO 48re. Other than the first 25k miles with factory fluids in it, I never had mopar atf+4 in the trans. My service guy called and they sold him an additive to be added to the Havoline he uses when doing flushes. The flushes were done on time and using the additive. The warranty for a new trans, radiator and cooler lines was honored.

What would make you think that "Mopar ATF+4" is anything other than their previous fluid with an additive package? I wouldn't hesitate for a second to run Amsoils product in my truck.

ATF+3 = non-synthetic and can not be used in ATF+4 only applications.

ATF+4 = synthetic and can be used in ATF+3 applications.

Actually, it has nothing to do with synthetic/non-synthetic (I have seen this statement and argument on many boards)... it is most likely a matter of convenience for DC... they only need one fluid for all their cars...

The +3 and +4 designation are actually for the cars DC makes... the 4XRX (45/46/47/48 RE/RH) series of truck trannies is very similar to the old time 727... they do not "need" special fluid, I know several running just fine on Dexron III. I ran my own 46RH and 47RE on regular Dexron III without problems... it does turn dark quicker, but it never gave problems... and both those trannies saw over 100k.

Just throwing that out. I did run LubeGuard from time to time in my 47RE, but on several occasions didn't because I couldn't find it... I put over 100k on that transmission with nothing but Dexron III. The transmission shop that rebuilt my 47RE claimed that the ATF+3 and +4 fluid actually caused seals to prematurely leak.

Go ahead and run ATF+3 in a 48re then have transmission problems down the road needing warranty work. DC WILL void the warranty if it was owner added atf+3 or other type of transmission fluid.

ATF+4 only.
