Competition race chassis question

Well, first off let me clarify: It's an '88 Supra turbo (230hp), 5 speed manual, and it had 3 people in it (really hurts a car that only weighs 2900lbs or so to begin with).

So a friend of mine with the Supra and I went out to the local late-night streetracing scene (my first!) on saturday night, cause he's into that kind of stuff, and I had nothing better to do. We had a few extra people with us, and I was told there are some pretty slow trucks there looking for someone more their speed, so I decided to bring my truck along...

Well to make a long story short, there were no trucks, and it turned out to be pretty lame, so we left.

On the way home, we lined up and raced from a 30mph roll (2000rpm in 3rd), and I lost ground during the 3-4 shift, but to everyone's suprise the Supra couldn't pull away any more than that! We ran up to about 90mph or so and shut down, and my buddy was just in disbelief... So we did it again, this time from a 45mph roll (in 4th this time), and again he pulled on me right away, but could do no better!

Now this may not impress too many people, but it sure did impress the Supra owner:D Got to respect the diesel powah!

My advice is to never engage in a similar race with even a mildly modified '93-'98 twin-turbo Supra..... you would only see taillights. I have driven a 10-second 1/4mile 2nd Gen Supra and they are without a doubt the most insane 45-145mph vehicle I have ever driven. Bone stock they are dogs until about 60mph... . then they pull nice. The Toyota 2JZ-GTE is one INSANE engine when properly modified.

Good to hear that you surprised the 1st Gen Supra owner..... I love doing stuff like that.

Holeshot, yeah I know not to mess with an MKIV ('93-'98), I too have been in the cockpit of a 500+rwhp TT. A friend of mine from college used to own a pretty fast 300ZX TT, and then purchased a '96 Supra TT, and we began the buildup from there. We got it to about 425rwhp by simply wiring in a fuel cut controller, and the bleeding the wastegate line with a T-coupler... Boost shot from somewhere around 10psi, up to 15-16psi. Not bad for $125 in parts!

BTW, it was a 3rd gen supra that I suprised:

MKI:?

MKII: '82-'86

MKIII: '86-'92

MKIV: '93-'98

MKV: coming soon!

You are right about it being the most insane 45-145mph car too, below ~50mph they can be pretty doggish...

My bad on the Supra generation misprint... . it's been so long since I have been onto the www.mkiv.com website that I'm loosing touch with all my Supra buddies... .

The website name pretty much says it all..... 4th Generation... . DER!!

BPU is easy and cheap... . BPU++ is around $1000 or so and you have more HP than you can shake a stick at. 900hp on pump gas isn't unheard of..... I love it!

The one I drove had a single Garrett T-70 on it... . the difference between 15 and 18psi was night and day. That car now has a 400hp wet NOS system on it, T-76 turbo, Fel-Pro, cams, ported head..... I can't wait to drive it again. Another buddy of mine just bought one all done up in a similar fashion... . so I'll be surrounded.

$75k  You know what I could do to a LS1 Trans-Am for that kind of money? For a street car, I don't want a turbo motor. Blowers maybe, but I'm not real crazy about those on a daily driver either.

WKener, where are these "races"? Just curious.

Hillcountrykid,

You know what I could do to a LS1 Trans-Am for that kind of money?

Yeah, actually I do know what you could do to an LS1 for that much... I just recently sold my '98 Camaro SS six speed (consistent mid 12 second car on street tires, off the bottle). The LS1's are fantastic motors, don't get me wrong, but that Toyota 3. 0 I6 is proven to be an 800+rwhp motor. I just love solid engineering, no matter what brand came up with it:D

Anyway, the racing scenes vary from night to night, and I am still not sure as to where they are going to be, I just follow:). But so far from what I have seen, they tend to meet up on wed. nights at Fudruckers off Anderson ln. Then on saturday nights they meet up at the Chili's at I35 and hwy 183. Again, I am not too sure about these locations/dates...

You can go to: www.texasracingscene.com and to the Austin forum to learn more. I must warn you though, it seems to me that most of the 'kids' there are pretty childish... Constant flame wars, useless posts, ect.

HillCountryKid, you should come out there some time (just let me know when), cause I would meet you there. The one time I brought my truck out, people looked at me kinda funny, it would be nice to have someone else for them to laugh at too!:D

Thanks for the offer WKener, but it would be best for me to stay away from any kind of street racing in the near future. 2 big tickets about a month or so ago has slowed me down lately. I don't imagine that I would fit in very well either. Maybe we could meet sometime at a get together though. I'll let you know if I hear of one coming up if you want.

Brian

BTW, I'm glad you did'nt ake my post as being a flame. I read it later and it can easily be taken as one.

Flame? Heck no, when I read your post I thought to myself, "ya know, that's exactly what I would have said!"

Yes, definitely let me know when a get-together is coming up, I would love that! And I understand about not wanting to participate in any sort of racing... Perfectly understandable. Actually, I feel kinda that way myself... I just moved back into Austin recently after living in Steamboat, CO where the cops are horrible, so I still find myself not wanting to go over the speed limit at all strictly out of fear;)

ps, you are right, we don't fit in at streetracing events anyway:D
