Perhaps. There's another bit of wisdom I learned over 56 years - no matter how fast you are (or think you are), there's always someone badder than you.
When I was a teen-ager growing up in Odessa, TX in the mid-60's, two guys from El Paso showed up at the local drive-in where us street racers (yeah, I was one) hung out. They had a Chevy II (later known as a Nova) 2 door HT with 427 rat motor, tunnel ram with dual Holleys, 4-speed, etc. and issued the challenge, "We'll run anything you have in this hick town for $1000. " Well, after a few phone calls, we escorted them to our local deserted farm-to-market road west of town. Waiting on them were a AA/FD (known as a top fuel dragster today) and a Hemi-powered AA/GS (gas supercharged) Willys coupe. They left town poorer but wiser. (Another old Texas saying fits here - "Them boys done brought a knife to a gunfight!")
About a year or two later, my best friend's girl friend died on that stretch of road. He was letting her race his new 396/375 Camaro - it went sideways when she hit 3rd and she rolled it into a ball. Obviously, I'm a slow learner - it took a number of friends dying before I gave it up.
Hay Rusty... ... ... . You sure have known a lot of bad luck people. I'm 60 and never have known anyone killed in a street race. Guess I'm a little luckier than you. Hope my luck doesn't run out... ... ..... Sure do like beatn them Fuds and smoken cigars.
Sure could. I'll tell ya what too. I feel that people are a lot safer if I'm going 90 ( i set the cruise at 75) than if some of these 85 year old people are going 70 on the freeway. I bet a lot more accidents come from them going the speed limit and not having the vision and reaction time to see what's coming than from people street racing. Just my opinion. I don't think it should be done in town or around anybody else, but I race people sometimes, and I speed sometimes. I bet almost everybody has sped at one time or another, probably raced someone too. Accidents happen and they're sometimes tragic. But a tire could also blow at 70 and cause a bad accident. Ya never know what's going to happen. It probably took a whole 15 seconds to get from 75 to 100, if nothing was on the road the only thing that was going to get hurt was them and an animal that may jump in front of them. Or they could just miss that deer that would have jumped in front of them if they didn't speed. I don't want to make anyone angry that's just how I feel.
