I ran a search and found nothing.
What do you guys use? Best place to buy?
I don't speed, it's for those traps, or maybe I'm watching the boost gage peg and I forget to watch the speedo! Red's the one with the lead foot... (really)!

MGM,
The absolute best radar/laser detector is Valentine One (www.valentine1.com) . It has been tested twice in comparision tests against other detectors in the years since it first came out, by Car And Driver magazine, and scores highest in all categories... . The quality and performance has to be seen to be believed...
I love mine, I never go anywhere without it.
Radar jammers? There's a brand out there called Phantom, but Car And Driver and other reputable sources say it doesn't work anywhere near what you'd expect. I wouldn't buy one, and I'm far more desperate than you are to find something that works, The Waffen SS has been reincarnated as the Kentucky State Police. Your best defense against the traffic Nazis is a sizable ($100) contribution to the Fraternal Order of Police when they solicit donations at Christmas time... demand the license plate plaque, not a dinky sticker...

Valentine! Absolutely the best detector.

Have never read a reliable report of a working jammer. If you do find one please let me know!

Mike

I agree about the Valentine, just never saved up enough money for one yet. Think they run around $400. Jammers are useful against cops who don't know what they are. When the cop gets "00" on his radar and realizes it's a jammer he can turn his radar on standby and your jammer will send your speed back to him. Neat trick, if ya the cop. My Dad had one is his Peterbilt and got about 3 tickets with it before he sold it. Also jammers only work to the front, you can still be clocked from behind. Hope this helps.

I have had several detectors over the years, but after buying a valentine I wouldn't buy anything else. It's the best I've owned by a huge margin. One "big" ticket avoided and it's paid for itself.

This is a record! Everybody agrees!
How about the best place to buy? Or is it factory only?
Thanks for the input.
I think ALL tickets are big! Some traffic cops are getting wayyyy out of control.
My drive to work is 50 minutes of small towns and speed limit changes. Drives me nuts!
One town is the one where those moron kids were on the center line at night, in the fog trying to be tough. And I'm the bad guy!

One thing I forgot to mention ! The laser detector part of the Valentine One... .
The way laser works, it's instantaneous. If your V1 sounds off and indicates laser, you're busted. You got just enough time to rip it off the windshield and chuck it under the seat before the obersturmbahnfuhrer pulls up on your back bumper and starts the Village People light show...
Even Car And Driver magazine says so... .
No defense against laser, not in something with as much frontal area as a Dodge truck. Fortunately, it's not widely used, most governments dislike paying the really high price of laser units... Your best defense is twofold, research the speed detection methods being used in the states you travel through(type of radar, or laser, type and color of panzerwagen being used by Gestapo). Second part of defense is driving smart, stay in a pack of cars if you're going faster than legal, stay in the right lane as much as possible, and CONCENTRATE ! I've gotten busted when I was daydreaming, but all my busts have been on two lane roads, they've never got me on the interstate, #ad

MGM, sorry about your bust in South Carolina, hope you got the confederate flag off your truck in time,heehee... I got pulled over in S. C. on the interstate 6 years ago,Lawrence Fishburne look-alike in mirror sunglasses, 4inches taller than me(and I'm 6'3" ! !) driving a laser equipped black Mustang. I was doing only 9 over, he let me go after writing up a warning ticket, I couldn't believe it !

Actually I'm going to have to disagree with this long line of Valintine. I know they are good but I decided to install a whistler permanent radar detector in my truck. It has an led panel which I had installed in the overhead panel because I have no computer. Then since this is permanent unit there is a detector that is in the front bumper and rear bumper. Then a laser detector is placed on the winshield. It also has a temp gauge that it uses when not working. It will shut itself off if you are detected using it in VA or some other place that doesn't allow radar detectors. Then it also detects road work and all that new projector stuff. It's a great unit and it's really powerful because it's a permanent unit and it puts out some serious power. Hope this helps.

sorry to be the fly in the ointment... especially as a newbie, but i disagree with everyone.

i can't remember the name of the system (yes a system), but i am looking through my old Roundels (BMW car club) as my girlfriend and i were discussing this very topic last weekend.

there is a detector/laser jammer that the Roundel tested (some of those bmw drivers like to drive fast... . so i've heard #ad
) it is a regular radar detector with all the usuall bands. it is also a laser detector... but where is diverges from all others is is in it's ability to throw out a pulse of light that jams the laser gun of the police. it gives you about 5 seconds to slow down as the laser gun resets itself.

these aren't manufacturer's claims... the magazine tested it. the only drawback i can see is that the front and back of the dodge are so big that it would require two laser detectors/receivers/receptors on the front and two on the back (one unit in the car) and two light pulse emmitters (assuming you want protection at both ends).

the way the lasers work is they bounce light off something shiny on vehicles. . license plates, headlights etc. and the receiver/receptor can only be so far from one of these tag points that's why a ram would require two on each end.

the system comes with one car unit, one receiver/receptor and one light emmitter. you can buy additional receptor/reciever and light emmitters.

the way the article said that this system got away with what they do is that there is no law restricting the emmision of light.

i promise i will continue to look and repost my findings as to the name of the company. finding the product review is a bit of a stretch at this point.

by the way i don't know if i will buy one. my girlfriend definitely wants one. i do my speeding on motorcycles early on sunday mornings. HOWEVER, if i get a viper in a couple of years i will ABSOLUTELY get one of the buggers!

just my two cents (seems more like two bits, doesn't it?)

I was just going to lurk here, but decided to open my big mouth today #ad

I have a Valentine and like it a lot. Factory only, at $400 it paid for itself quickly, especially in peace of mind. I have run others and there is no comparison. The Valentine shows direction and number of signals. For example, Smokey is hiding near a store that has an intruder alarm. You are used to the false signal there. He gets you unless you have a Valentine which gives a unique series of chirps telling you there are TWO signals there today. Or, you have a signal and don't know where the "problem" is. Valentine tells you the direction. Of course it tells signal type and strength. Their website has good information about the advantages to their detector.

Rammers, at least up to just before the current model, may have another option. If you got the ceiling console with the empty pocket, the detector fits there. Run the wiring through the headliner and A pillar to the fuse block. The detector sees radar just fine through glass and plastic, and a cover--even a paper towel--hides the incriminating evidence. No box on the dash to infuriate the "Man" who might think you are trying to get away with something. Another alternative is their remote package but I am happy with the console mount.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Question; On a 97, would the ashtray be a good spot, or is there to much interferance?
Also does everyone agree the jammers don't work?
I think I would like one that frys their equipment! "SMOKEY SEEKING MISSILE" Could you picture their face as the gun melts?
Gene

I agree: V1 is the best because it sorts out the signals. Have had one for 3 years... no citations. In NM the IRS is the Waffen SS, the State Polizei aren't bad. You can usually cruise about 9. 5 knots above the limit on the interstates without a problem. It's the county sheriffs who are trying to make a name for themselves, although our local magistrate judge, a card-carrying NRA, over-valved (2K 5spd 4x4)turbodiesel nut, has made it clear to them not to waste his time with anything that isn't at least 10 over. As For DD's comment, isn't that just typical of a pilot, wants a glass cockpit in everything that moves. How about FADEC in your Ram? #ad

Ok guys, since i have osme expirence in this area I will offer my . 02.

Most conventional ( doppler) radars used by Police agencies today are instant on. The beam however is fairly wide so it relies on the operator to pick out which vehicle is traveling at the higher speed. However, the conventional radars will always pick out the larger vehicle to register the display speed, so we are usually outta luck.
Lasers are today, not much more than conventional radar units. They are HIGHLY accurate and have a range of about 4000 feet. Laser radar dectors or jammers have a maximum range of 1000 feet, so ..... if your laser detector goes off it's too late, you were had long before it went off. In general, 10 mph over is accepted, but any more than that and you are on yor own.

OK, I don't know much about radar detectors (for the car, at least!) but I do know a little about jammers. From what I've read about what's on the market, don't waste your money. A radar jammer is a pretty specialized device unless you just want to barrage jam the cops detector and you'd need some power to do that. As for frying the cop's detector, you'd need quite a bit of power, too.

As I said, I haven't read anything that would make me go out and spend even a dollar on one of these things out today.

Now, for my credentials and why I think I can comment on this topic: I am an Electronics Countermeasures Officer flying EA-6B Prowlers in the Navy. I've been doing the radar jamming thing for 13 years now and have even done it where there's a bit more at stake than a simple ticket (read: where people were really shooting at me and my wingman). Get a good set of "RWR gear" (Radar Warning Receiver) and realize that if it goes of, you're busted - radar or laser. It only takes a split second to determine your speed with either.

The advice about traveling in groups of cars is best; then you might have a case about the cop not being exactly sure which car he read, but you'd have to be able to talk beam widths, azimuths, signal to noise ratio, etc. Personally, if you're gonna race, find a little (red) sports car to hang with - the cops'll think it's him, not the big lumbering truck! Good luck!

Hey Joel,
Supercool credentials there! You're living a life most of us can only dream about! FLY NAVY !
Can't hardly believe we got us a real-life ECM backseat guy on this forum !
Not trying to be a smart aleck or embarrass you, just believe in supporting our people in the military. (My son plans to join the Navy)

I employed a slightly different option. I removed the console unit (I have the compass
in there), and used my Dremel to gouge out the front edge of the plastic. I then installed the detector (K-40, which seems to
work well enough for me - no tickets, and I'm usually running 75-80) *above* the headliner and use the console to keep it in place. 2. 5 years and no problems. *And* I don't have to worry about it being seen.

Granted, the LEDs are quite useless there, and it took a couple attempts to get the volume just right, but it's up tight and outta sight, always on (even in VA and CT).
Besides, I don't really care to advertise its existence, and an audible warning is good enough.

After having a Uniden for years, I figured it was time for a new one, and the K-40 seemed good enough (it is).

As to laser detection, what is the usable range on the police units? And unless you are completely alone on the road, don't you have *some* time to dump velocity? After all, if there're a couple other vehicles on the road, the ocifer will want a couple readings to be sure he's got the correct offending vehicle/driver.

IMHO the best defense is a good CB and a victum ahead of you . I always do close to the limit until someone comes flying by(you don't have to wait long) let him pass and drop in behimd about a half mile behind. I'v watched enough of my victums get my ticket that I know it works. That and a good CB are a lot less than $400. Those guys think I'm real nice to let them by, but I'm just laughing at their stupidity, radar dector or not.
