2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Leak advice, anyone?

Had my bug screen off the radiator for the winter and couldn't find it so I put on a regular 1/16'' mesh window screen. On the first drive noticed my intake air temp measured at the intake horn was about 15° higher than normal. Went back, looked harder and found my 1/8'' mesh screen, next drive my intake temp was back to the level it was without any screen at all. Coolant temp remained the same.

I'm thinking window screen might be too restrictive.

Bill,

Apparenlty the screen is restrictive if your IAT's were affected. The question is, Is 15 degrees significant? I would imagine so seeing how we are only working with about a 40 degree window. Thanks for the information.

Bill, How strange you should post this because I just put my bug screen on yesterday and I noticed a diff too, I have ram air and I can open the inlet and pull it down to what ever ambient temp is and today on the way home from work I could only get it down to 92* and the ambient temp here was only 78* so I guess I need to throw the window screen away and get some courser stuff :)

Tomorrow will be a big test as my gross will be around 32k , I will have a big tandem duelly and a shootin boom onboard

cheers, Kevin

Bob, only an old timer here would remember that one, as I recall it resulted in more than one suspension. Hope this doesn't start a screen war.

Yeah, I 'umember that one and some other classics. I don't qualify as a charter member, but I do miss some of the "spirited" flavor that seems to have dissipated over time. I know moderators do not agree.

You know I was towing my 5th wheel for the first time with my 02 last night, and I noticed a temp climb on small grades at 65mph. Might be my bug screen as well. I posted it over in the 24v engine section "runs hotter while towing"

Way to go Bob! :D

That was a heated topic basically between two NW BOMBers (but voiced their opinions/concerns on that matter here on the TDR BB). I'm happy to say they are friends again! :D

I'm glad too because they are both very good friends of mine and it was causing me pain to see two good friends go out of their way not to talk about the other when around me. I'm proud to say both posses the highest integrity, and moral attributes I've seen in ANY two people in a long, long time! :)

Bill;

Try putting the fan back on. Maybe it will help compensate for the small pitch screen?

Summer is really late and the bugs aren't out in numbers. I just put the fan on 2 weeks ago and the screen will be sometime this weekend.

BTW, Aren't both of them using bug screens now?

1/8'' or 8 mesh hardware cloth. It's used a lot for sealing off vents from bugs and rodents. My local Ace Hardware sells it off a three foot wide roll for 57¢/ft, four feet is plenty. They even have it in black, green and plain galvanized.

I used standard aluminium window screen to make my screen. I did notice yesterday that I was just a bit hotter than usual, running down the highway, unloaded ( except for mother in law)

at 70 mph. Wasnt too much hotter than usuall but I could tell that the gauage was slightly higher.

Is there any problem with this? I dont tow. I like the fact that the smaller screen catches everything. I live off of a dirt road and there are LOTS of bugs in Michigan in the summer.

Thanks

With 1/8'' screen my coolers stay clean so it must work good enough. For folks who aren't modified or don't tow window screen should be of no concern. If your egts are running close to the edge the 15° increase I saw might push them over the edge. 15-25° lower at the intake is about what I see with a Scotty over the stock airbox, this also translates into around 150° lower egts with a load. Not sure of the ratio of intake temp to egt but it for sure isn't one to one.

MY EGT's were pretty much were they usually are. But I was pushing a headwind most of the way so they may have been alittle higher, but definatly nothing that made me worry or even take notice. I was more "concerned" with the slight elevation of the engine coolant. BUt again it was not too much.

I think I'll run like this for a while longer, atleast till we get our 90deg weather and 110% humidity. Yeah we get 110%- 100% for the actual humidity and the other 10% is made up of mosquitos LOL.

I'll post my findings when it gets warm enough.

Thanks

I just

use a brass brush to clean the fins on the front end. No concerns about temps. The fin get alot of dust and other crap in them so the brush keeps them in nice shape. JMHO

Bill, do you attach your screen to the back or the grill or to the front of the A/C condensor?

Thanks.
Blake, I attach mine right to the radiator support up against the coolers, others to the back of the grill, don't think it makes much difference.

Another note on window screen, even though it appears to be restrictive it's nowhere near as restrictive as coolers full of bugs.
