Anybody here had to replace the rain gutters on their home? I'm looking at having it done before we paint. I don't think this is something i want to do myself so i'm trying to get an idea of what i'd be looking at price wise. Thanks!

In Caif we had the seamless vinyl kind. I dont know what part of N Calif you live in but maybe not so good with allot of snow. But you guys do have the rain if on the coast.

We did that back in 2005. It was tough finding anything other than Aluminum and plastic. However, there is a gutter system out there that is tough as a tank. We had ABC Gutter install the steel stuff! Its great. However, the contractor is not. I had to have punchlist redos more than once! The gutters hold out under snow and ice damming. We get alot of that from January through March. I do not have a heat cable in the gutter on the north side. However, that needs to be done. Got the cable, just need to get it up there. I'm not selling this nor do I get a kick-back. Just some good quality materials. Now you need to pick the right contractor do do a good job! Ignore their sales pitch, Pay nothing until the job is completed to your satisfaction! Heres a link! GregH

I live in the Bay Area, just hate to admit it;) Where i'm at we get rain and LOTS of wind. I (like everybody else), am just looking for longevity at a fair price.

Nothing wrong with the Bay !. So Cal didnt have near the rain you guy's do but the winds at times were crazy bad. We lived at the bottom of Cajon Pass and the santa ana winds you had to tie a cinder block on your belt so ya dont blow away. ( not really ) but my gutters never left the side of my house.

Thanks for the link i'll definitely check them out. Yeah as far as winds I live in the wind tunnel off the Carquinez Strait, definitely limits the life expectancy of your fence... and small animals. Cuts down on the raking of leaves though. I'm going to call around and get a few estimates, not a lot of good reviews for the local places though.

5" seamless aluminum K style gutter with hidden bar hangers every 2' screwed into the fascia board... about $8/ft installed... make up around 80% of the guttering in the northeast.

Is it worth putting the covers on the gutters? This is going to be a house that i want to have as little maintenance as possible. I might be renting it out in as soon as 6 months and then moving out of state. My father in law will be looking after the place while we still own the home. Just trying to keep the work load to a minimum.

Joe, covers are great if you don't want to clean them, or in your case of not being there.
there are many different covers... screens will allow the most water to flow into them but also snag certain tree droppings and occasionally need to be cleaned. I prefer a ridged flat periforated aluminum cover made by Alcoa "Leaf Relief" its 10ft long and is screwed to the top of the gutter and rests against the fascia not up unto the roof. The only down side is with a heavy down pour you may get some over flow... i will usually caution my customers about that but have not had much negative feedback. I've been installing it for about 6 yrs. Cost is about $4-5/ft on a new gutter installation. Derrick

4 years ago I sold my business of 28 years.

we were lucky to get get them sold at $3. 00 a foot installed!!!

Maybe I need to get back into it.

The flat covers for leaves will almost make the gutter un-needed! Water goes over it so fast it all misses the gutter.

I would only sell screens for it.

Here in NE, people use a product called Gutter Brush. It's a long, round, bristled affair that lets water through, while holding out debris. It is supposed to be easily installed by the home owner.

Joe , that should give you a baseline $ probably vary regionally. To bad your not in Illinois fox could probably get the job done for a couple hundred bucks! The gutter brushes and gutter fill probably work ok but they trap a lot of debris. I've seen them in gutters before and thought the gutter looked packed with debris until looked closer, these would have to be pulled out and hosed off... who needs that maintenance. The flat covers do have a lip in the front and they sit slightly into the gutter, water does drain into them under most conditions, these are the least maintenance. just my experience... Derrick

Just got a quote here in Oregon for my shed, TWO 12' gutters each with a down spout, $150 installed, on the schedule for the 25th. I can't remember the length, BUT I had the same company do my house 3-4 years ago, I think about $400 for the whole house, 1500SF, but it is two story so not a huge footprint.
