Got rear-ended today. Was stopped waiting for traffic,(red lite) and suddenly hear tiresqueal behind me. Then got SMACKED!

After putting glasses back on, and finding my cel-phone, I looked in the rear-view mirror. couldn't really tell much, so pulled forward a little (lite had turned green and other cars had gone away) out of the traffic lane. Other guy pulls his onto the median, and parks. He said he got distracted, and then he was on me. Couldn't swerve to right (other traffic). Had no choice/ locked 'em up, but nailed me, just to the right of the trailer hitch's drawbar.

Twisted the bumper a bit, shined the brackets on the hitch, left some blue paint on the chrome, broke the tail-lite (not the bulb, or the functional part of the lens), and a slight bow in the tailgate.

His truck didn't fare nearly as well. Cut the radiator, framerail protruding thru his front bumper, driver's lite shattered, fender overlapping door about 3/4", hood bowed to about a 10-12" peak above fender. End of his bumper bowed all the way to the tire.

Both had seatbelts (mine inconsequential from this direction), but his didn't tighten up very well... bounced his chest off the steering wheel. (could have been worse, I suppose)

When I got out and went to see if he was OK, he was rubbing his chest. (thought to myself "OMG the old guy's gonna survive the accident, only to croak with the truck in park"). Such was not the case, however, and finally the cop arrived to write up the mess.

He and I aggreed it was a good thing we were both in fairly heavy vehicles :) . (although maybe he might have not had such a nasty damage if I'd been a little lighter---but then, how much more to me???)

GOD LOVES BIG TRUCKS! (I'm convinced of it) People are nearly always safer in one.

No ambulances, and only one tow truck needed.

Already got a quote for a stock replacement bumper ($355 from the dealership), so now I need to figure out a good aftermarket bumper to replace with. (preferably with ports for some real backup lites)

Suppose there may have been damage to the hitch? I suspect I'll have the insurance guy, and maybe a hitch shop BOTH evaluate that. If that's functionally damaged, that would be a good excuse to go with a Reese Titan!

Might get decent upgrades for just a couple hundred of my own out-of-pocket dollars... Woo-hoo!

Any suggestions for a good HD bumper? I'm just way too time-challenged to realistically build my own...

Glad to hear you ok. Check out MacTrucks new Reunel rear bumper. It is color matched, made of 1/2" plate steel and has cutouts for the included PIAA lights. It is one tough bumper.

Sorry to hear, but a good thing ..... Maybe New Bumper paid for my Ford owner... ... Nice !

I agree with EMD Mactruck's rear bumper is sweet... .

Rich,

I went through this same thing a couple of months ago. I was stopped on our local Loop 101 in Scottsdale where the normal speed limit is 65. Dude hit me going about 25-30 in a '90 Buick Century. You didn't mention if you have a 4x4, but mine is, and I have a Tommy Gate and factory (recall modified) hitch. Tommy took the brunt of the force and shrugged it off. Sheared one of the bolts on the hitch modification. NO body damage. Adjuster put me down for a new lift gate and hitch (the gate shifted on its' mount and *looked* tweeked, but really wasn't ;-) so I ended up with a $2,400 payment and a new set of wheels, tires and valve body! Thank you very much!

The Buick was dust. Worst part of the whole deal was watching him approaching in my rear view. He was looking to his left until the last few seconds. Finally he looked forward, and I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER his diaper! Thank god he hit me square though. Those Tommy's are tough! It is the second truck I've been rear-ended in with one attached. The first one had a few scratches to the paint and nothing else. Though they look real utilitarian compared to a customer HD rear bumper, they're not that much more $$$, and you can lift 1000lbs into your bed with one finger. Opens up a whole new set of women out there to date as my co-workers kid me about.

Make sure that the adjuster pays close attention to the bed, and make sure it did not shift forward, and do replace that hitch and bolts.

Good luck and milk it for all its' worth. Lord knows you've paid for it over the years.

Tommy Lift!!!

Hey Oilburner

Dating days are over! :)

I'm thinking, new light, new BD torque converter, and Reunel!

We'll have to see... haven't had the body shop appointment, yet, but the lady from his ins. company was real nice on the phone.

Better check the email to see what kinda price is on my fantasy bumper ;)

Ride hieght is the key to accident survival :D. I hit a guy two years ago in my Lifted Toyota 4x4. Typical head up @ss deal. Looked at the radio looked up and *&%^$#&%. Hit the back of a 94 New Yorker at 35mph. My truck had the factory brushguard that had been modified on the bottom for more clearnace. The gaurd hit above his bumper and obliterated his car. I layed the truck over in the ditch to make sure I didn't get hit from behind(he was off the brakes and I launched him). The Locker got me out of the ditch with a little creativity. The new yorker was totaled. Tailights to the back seat(he was ok as was I thank god) The toyota came out with $180 worth of damage. Mangled my already rock mangled lower valance and trashed my Off road lights. Makes it kinda scary to think of all the SUV vs Car accidents that happen all the time. The SUV/Truck bumper just flat misse the car bumpers and goes right for the soft parts.

Check the Diff!

Rich -

Be sure to check your differential! I had the same thing happen to me, fortunately the guy only impaled himself on my receiver hitch (gotta love the solid bar-stock 10,000# 2-5/16" Class IV's). Anyway, two days later, I had my differential crap out on me. The local Dodge dealer said that he's seen it several times, when a truck is stopped with the gear lash in the "ahead" position, and gets a shock like that, that it can crack the gears. Luckily I had the guy's information, even though he initially only cut the rubber ball saver on my hitch, and gave me $5 for a new one.

P. S. This is also a good way to toss in a Mag-Hytec...

DIFF CHECK?

DOES THAT REQUIRE A disass'y and visual?-- so far it's been fine, but haven't towed anything this weekend, either... . Got the MH already, but hate to lose the Amsoil--hmmmmm
