There is a big difference is overloading the door jam and overloading the truck. It's easy to overload the door jam on HD trucks and still be safe, the same just isn't true about LD trucks.

The deal is that the OP is so set on doing it that even if he does have a failure he won't tell anyone, at this point it about his perceived pride and not logic. It could seriously injur, or kill, someone in or around his setup but he will find something else to blame. The sad thing is that most people see thru it...

No the deal is all you keyboard Cowboys have never driven for a living. You've never taken a vehicle to its true limits or beyond. You don't take into account the factory GCWR or axle wts are there in part to protect the MFG from idiots who grossly overload a truck and want to blame the MFG for failures. And don't even try to claim that truck is grossly overloaded. We all know better. And finally, time to put up or shut up. Somebody show me proof of extra liability that was actually assigned in a non commercial use because of a mildly over loaded axle, the likes of which we are debating.

I am well over my door sticker limits, but I know the engineering limits which is a far cry from anything going on here. What's going on in this thread is nothing but pure stupidity by the OP. It's not mildly overloaded, it's neglegetly overloaded. It's illegal, at least in most states, if his registration and tires are good for the weight it's just stupid.

It has nothing to due with legality, liability, etc. it's a simple matter of purposely endangering those around him, What's even worse is the fact that his wife owns a truck more than capable but he has an ego that isn't capable of letting him be smart enough to make a change.

The best part is posting everything on the internet (yes it is a public place) so when he does have an accident and the big city lawyer finds he knew what he was doing was wrong he will wish he never tried it.

I just LOL'd at someone from Palmer talking about city folk. Move out of the urban sprawl of Alaska.....Palmer is twice the size of my hometown.

I'd drive that truck but wouldn't necessarily be comfortable with it rolling down the road next to me. The unknown human behind the wheel is the wild card. That said it doesn't look anymore unsafe than those chip trailers-called 5th wheels some
pull behind a pickup truck.

I was thinking a GMC Astro slab cab with the double breasted yamaha (318 detroit). One of the nicest looking cab-overs ever

The GMC Astro was a twin sister to the Titan 90. Had a wrap around dash that curved around and down the center on the cab. So some of the controls and gauges were beside me and in easy reach with right hand. Lots of aluminum, frame and cab all aluminum! Tractor weighed in at 15K and aluminum 8500 gal trailer weighed 10K, giving a 25K tare weight. 8500 x 6.1 + 25,000 =76,850, so there was some room to have some diesel in some of the compartments(5). Only problem was the axle spacing was short of Washington State bridge laws. I hauled out of a Texaco Terminal in Port Angeles, Wa. My uncle started the company in 1933, then my father and the book keeper bought it. Dad drove a single screw Crackerbox GMC in the end with 318. I worked there as a kid, and my dad sold his 51% to the book keeper in early 1976, that August I went to work for him and drove the tanker for 3 years. It is harder work than some might believe. We carried a lot on case goods in two driver side compartments. These compartments would also hold 55 gal drums of oil. Dump hoses were 4" and heavy and stiff! Between driving truck and riding a dirt bike on week-ends I was in pretty good shape.

The Chevrolet Titan 90 (and similar GMC Astro 95) were heavy-duty Class 8 cabover trucks made by General Motors between 1968 and 1988. When introduced, they replaced the GMC F-Series "Crackerbox" & featured an all-aluminum tilt-cab. Diesel engine choices included Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit Diesel powerplants.

In 1980, both trucks were redesigned with a bigger grille, which was optional on the SS or Special Series Titan models and Astro 95 in 1978-79.

1980 was the last year for Chevrolet Semi Trucks or Big Rigs (Class 8 Heavy Duty Trucks).

The Titan 90 was introduced in 1969. In 1980 (the last year for The Titan), it was just Titan.

The GMC Astro 95 was introduced in 1968 as a 1969 model and made until 1987. In 1980, the name was just GMC Astro.

The GMC version was more common than the Chevrolet version.

The GMC Astro single-axle City Tractor with two 28 foot trailers was used in the film Beverly Hills Cop in the cigarette chase scene

My older brother drove a Titan with a screaming detroit 8v-71 , hauling mail for Canada Post. the windshield was so big that you were exposed right to your kneecaps to oncoming traffic. I loved the look of them though.

I always had the first person to the wreck feeling while driving it. I would let the clutch out to get out of the yard in PA and push it back in in Forks or Clallam Bay, with lots of clutchless shifts in between. The RoadRanger 13 speed was a nice transmission! 1-5, 6L, 6H, 7L, 7H, 8L, 8H, 9L, 9H. SNOKING

Its been close to 40 years behind the wheel for me now ....mostly bus (motorcoach) with a few years in between with various tractors. Still bussing and always have that "first one to get there " feeling.

I had a lance 815 extended cab over on my 99 CTD 3/4 ton.. Hated it the extended cabover with no rear overhang put me 800 lbs over the front axel weight ratings.. Thing was scary to drive ... The next camper had a rear hangover and drove much better. I would not put any hard side truck camper on a 1500 truck .. I would consider a pop up soft side of some sort
Just my 2 cents good luck
Chris

THE ANSWER IS, sale the 1500 and buy a 2500 or a 3500 its more then just adding air bags to the truck. That truck is not designed to carry a camper!!!!!!!!
And as far as a one ton daully over weight buy 2000 or more pounds is bull**** not when a 11 or 12 foot camper is about 3800 or 3900 lbs. Just because "joe blow" is over weight does not make it right. people always trying to stuff 10lbs of **** in a 5lb bag.

Not to mention trying to stop all that mass with Dodge's under-engineered brakes. I finally had a Pacbrake installed on my '98.5 2500 which gave me some sense of security with the camper mounted. The 2500 manuals and 3500's at least had wider drums.

That's totaly wrong, our brakes today are state of the art, 2004 the 2500Ram was best
in Class and I can push mine on dry asphalt into the ABS - with 35" Tires.
And they don't get worse within the last 10 years.
The brake disaster ended fast with DC showing up.
