Off Roading skyjacker

off on the tangent again

Mopar,

yes, there are a few guys who are running the 4-speed manuals in their cars. I believe John Massengil (big time small block builder... works with the likes of John Lingenfelter and Winston Cup teams) has a camaro with a huge engine in it that runs in the low 10s/high 9s, but he's the only really fast guy I can think of offhand. Those numbers you listed are pretty interesting. The only thing I can reason is that the auto has more of an advantage when you get down into the sub 10 sec range. Normally it's the case that the manual is faster for normal/economy/ricer cars because they're going so slow anyway. But, add a boatload of HP and maybe the auto actually works out a little faster  Deep thoughts... lol :D

HH,

my point about the stator in the ATS converter is that it's not just thrown on a lathe and turned down like the older "traditional" milled stators are. I'm sure the way they're cutting their pieces has been researched as well.

i called lenco before nowell switched from stick to auto, they felt it would work but there were a couple of problems to overcome ... first was no overdrive ratio for the lenco , without it the diesel needs something around a 3. 08 gear so its not going thru the traps at 6000 rpm ( i'm just throwing out an rpm) and there isn't , to my knowledge , a race gear in the 3. 00 range for a ford 9" , and it would get old fast redoing the rear when you spit out an old factory gearset because of the big tire needed to hook a 2whl drive , which means you'd need to run a topfuel size tire to knock the ratio down

at the end of sept is the diesel drags at epping , if diesel doug is there , old chev pickup with a detroit 316 6lunger , i'll crawl around the thing and see what he is using . he is using a topfuel size slick on the rear and is runnin' 9's , no way he's doing that with a factory based auto

john , owner/operator ... kan'taffordit racing

banshee , you got a point , i don't know where the stick cutoff point is , caltrac is running a stick in his mustang and i'm pretty sure he is sub 10's , maybe sub 9's ???

I Called Lenco Too

John, to get OD on the Lenco, don't you just bolt up one more section? Doc "P" suposedly used a Lenco in his 1-ton truck. It reportedly had four speeds (4-sections) plus double OD via two extra sections bolted to the first group of four.

I thought I read that Doug Doring is using a Lenco as well.

I had to stop my persuit of the lenco product when they told me the price of their transmission

But another thing I was cautioned about was the extreme parasitic loss with the Lenco. Now I don't know what the real story is, but it did seem to make some sense that with all those gears rolling around in there that the Lenco would have much more frictional equvilent then a standard 5-speed. The point was made that cars with 2000 horsepower won't notice the frictional loss. So that would be a good application.

Recently went to the NHRA nationals event, as well as a few NHRA division 6 events. There are a lot of cars running the 8. 90, 9. 90 and 10. 90 index and a pile of other classes too. When these cars would line up the announcer would always tell the names of the racing team, the name of the driver, the # of cubic inch engine it has, and the type of transmission. The vast majority of these cars all had automatic trannys.

(You didn't hear this from me!)

Doug is using like a 2. 70:1 ratio and a 740 Allison... .

His experience has shown that using a lower (numerically) ratio and no OD on the transmission works best. The diesels love the load out of the hole that the lower gears give you.....

Then again, he's racing using a 2-stroke - ~318cid V6..... gotta compare apples to apples.
