HELP!!! My aux tank was near empty and unported going around a corner. The motor died and will not restart. Any ideas on how to purge the fuel lines? Can it be done by towing companies or will the truck have to be towed into town (50 miles) to the Dodge dealer?

What year truck?

If you get some fuel in the tank, just bump the starter, this will get the liftpump to start suckin', do that a few times, and it should fire right up. Good Luck!

Later, Rob

EDIT, After you tried the above, and it still doesn't start, soak a rag in gasoline, and lay it over the air filter element, then get in and start it. DON'T USE STARTING FLUID!!!

Hope that was Diesel not gas would help if we knew what truck you have mod year . Start with bumping starter after putting in some Fuel and then if that don't work blead the lines one at a time crack line small amount bump starter look for air bubbles cont till all air is out . Also put the excelorator to the floor and try to start for ten seconds or so rest for a sixty seconds try some more resting for heat at starter. LOL Ron In LOUISVILLE KY

  :D

Since you posted in the 24v forum, I assume you have a 24v and an electric lift pump.

If you are in a quiet enough area, you can bump the starter, and you will hear the lift pump humming. It'll run for 20-30 seconds, I forget the exact number. If you repeat this cycle enough, you'll hear the sound change when it finally has some fuel to pump (instead of air). It's taken me 8 to 10 tries sometimes. Since I installed my fuel pressure gauge, I don't have to listen for it, and that's a good thing, as my hearing isn't what it used to be.

After you hear the change, try to start it. Hold the pedal down, and crank up to about 15 seconds. Wait two minutes before cranking again. It's a small starter and it gets HOT!

It'll run rough for a while after it starts, but it'll smooth out.

You may want to change the fuel filter after this adventure. There's no telling what you've sucked into it. You'll get to practice the priming ritual again after you change the filter.

Sorry guys, sometimes I just start typing and don't think about all the details. My truck is a 2001 2500 with the high output diesel. I have bumped the starter several times and no luck. There is a schrader valve on the side of what I think is the injection pump and I have pushed it in while the electric pump is running (bumped the starter) and it spews fuel. It appears that fuel is getting to the injection pump but not pulling through.

The owners manual says if bumping the starter doesnt work that the lines have to be bled by an "authorized facility" and I am trying to be that guy (I work very cheaply). How do they do it?

Been there done that...

I just did this last week, feeling like a serious case of the DAs. Works best with a little assistance but what worked best for me was to bleed the injection lines where they thread into the head. You can't get them all unless you have a crow foot or some other exotic 3/4" wrench handy but I got mine going after doing 3. Crack the nut loose and have your assistant crank the engine over with the throttle wide open. Tighten the line after you stop seeing bubbles, doesn't take long. You may get a little cracking the connections at the pump but your air bubbles will rise and those are at the bottom. Good luck, you won't have any trouble getting this taken care of as there is plenty of good tech support here. And unfortunatlely in my case, experience.

You'll need a 19mm openend wrench. You won't be able to get the wrench on all of the lines, but you don't need to do more than two or three to get enough air out of them to get it going.

Loosen one line - crank the engine for a few seconds - take a look and see if there is fuel running out of the fitting - keep doing that until you get a puddle of fuel on the head under the fitting. Thighten that fitting and move to the next one that you can get the wrench on and repeat. Try starting it after you tight the line and see if it will go - repeat on the thrid line if required.

Make sure you have at least five gallons of fuel in the tank before you do any of this.

The lines are pretty tight.

Thanks for the info. I will try disconnecting the injection lines. Everything else has been a no go. I just jumped the truck to my other car to get the batteries all charged up. I have cranked the starter a total of about 2 minutes (total of all attempts-with cooling time between).

I will get back to you with the results.

I've heard that torque is critical on those fittings. If you can't torque them to 28 ft-lbs with a wrench, make your best guess.

Jim

Jim (Ethdee) is correct, you don't want to over-torque those fuel line fittings !!! The possibilities if you over-tighten: leaks, deformed fittings, ruined threads, injectors or connector tubes deformed, out of place, or damaged.....

28 ft. lbs. 19mm crow's foot wrench snapped onto a torque wrench will do the job.

OK guys, WE ARE IN BUSINESS!!!. I did cylinder #1 and tightened it back on. Then I did # 3 and it sounded like # 1 was trying to fire while I was purging #3, so I put #3 back together and started her up. I don't have a crows foot so i am not too sure on the torque, but I went just past snug. I will have to figure something out tomorrow when I head for town.

Again, thanks for the input from everyone.

Can someone tell me how to set up my signature so I can include my truck info with future posts?
