My dealer called me today for a Rapid Response Recall on my 600. He said this recall is to important for the regular mail recall route. SOME 600s, they are not sure which ones, may have a cooling system problem ... that could cause a rapid loss of coolant. It may have to do with the block heater installation. The dealer needs the truck for an overnighte cooling system pressure check. They have to do a cold morning start, then go thru various throttle positions ending up with a burst at full throttle. Again this is NOT ALL 600s but, DC don't know which ones are affected.

Dealers have a vin list. Many vehicles will be checked before they are delivered, and most will probably be just fine.

I haven't heard a peep from my dealer yet. I suppose I ought to call them. I had a similar problem in my PSD last summer. I noticed my coolant level had dropped slightly;the dealer traced to a bad freeze plug.

Anybody received a call?

I just got a call from my dealer. Burst of throttle is wide open throttle for three minutes to test freeze plugs. Dealer was told they can replace one freeze plug if needed but if two are required, engine replacement is required and truck goes to auction. I do not like the idea of wide-open throttle for three minutes. Just received this truck last week after the first one got lost at the factory. Not real pleased with this news. Sounds like the holes drilled in the block for the freeze plugs were a little too large.

but if two are required, engine replacement is required and truck goes to auction

That doesn't make sense. Why not REPLACE the engine then? WHy does the whole truck go to auction?

Something doesn't sound right here.

That would not hurt anything. These engines are designed to run wide open for days as long as egt stays within specs.

It seems to me that a lot more people should be posting that their dealers are calling them about this.

What happens if we just ignore it?

Guess we can ignore it and hope we do not get caught out somewhere. I did not pay lots of money to have that doubt. Do not like the idea of wide-open throttle for three minutes on a cold engine but that might be better then wondering if the plugs are going to let go. The service manager read the memo to me and it does state that if one plug goes, DC will overnight the part to the dealer. If two plugs leak, engine replacement is required and truck will be replaced. Just going on what was read to me today. I just do not like the options I am getting on a truck with 150 miles on it.

Sorry... but I just don't believe this. Someone is pulling your chain LHarper and everyone else who believes this. Wide open for 3 minutes... . on a cold engine to test for a leaky freeze plug!?!?!?!?!?

And if two freeze plugs leak they buy back the truck??!?!?!? WTF!!!!!!

Hog-wash!!!!!!

If Cummins (they are installed by Cummins and not by DC) didn't use enough or any sealant they'd leak the first time you build coolant pressure. Actually, they'd probably leak just by adding coolant (I had a machine shop forget to add sealant to the freeze plugs... . leaked coolant before I was able to start her up)

I'm going to watch how this one pans out... ...

JTadra and LHarper,

Please post the build dates of your trucks and also maybe list the name and location of your dealers, I would like to call them because I cant trust anything my dealer tells me.

Oh yea, that would be Randall Noe Dodge in Terrel TX.

If there was a general problem that dealers were calling people about, wouldn't there be a TSB? Dealers in general are a great source of misinformation. Talk to another dealer, or e-mail Cummins.

MVaden:

My build date was the week of Janissary 05 2004. My dealer is Wayland Chrysler Wayland MI 269-792-2268. Diesel guy Kalvin. My truck will be tested Wed or Thurs. It is at the dealer now,

Yes it is three minutes at WOT with 10PSI in the cooling system. And just as Blakers said, these engines are designed to run at governed speed for hours and days on end. I don't have access to the RRT, but I think it said replace the truck only if it had not been sold, otherwise it gets the engine. I will check it tomorrow and correct if I am wrong.

One of the guys at work told me today that the dealer called him this morning about his truck. The told him if it does pass the test they were going to put a new engine in it.

Gotta love em for stepping up to the plate. Whereas another manufacture says 5% fuel dilution is normal. My favorite is another manufacturer says burning 2 quarts per oil change is within specs.
