I am considering doing a HID conversion on my '01 Ram Sport, and am curious as to how anybody else has liked a similar kit on their trucks. The search function doesn't show much of anything, so I figured I'd draw up a new post.

My concern is that the excessive vibration might have some ill effect on the gas charged bulb, or the ballast (although I'm doubting this on the ballast).

Before I drop potentially $500 on a kit, I'd like the piece of mind of knowing they're not going to vibrate away to nothing in a matter of months.

Thanks in advance all.

From what i understand the vibration has no effect on any of the parts. I have seen them used in semi trucks before Volvo I think. I sent you a pm about a set i have for sale if you are interested.

I looked at doing this to my truck and because the sport trucks have 4 bulbs total and it was going to cost about $750, plus install time to convert the current system over to a pos switched system.

There are a few threads and a few guys on the board who have done this.

Instead of doing the convert I bought some sylvanya silverstars and added a set of big driving lights.

One other thing I have noticed is that the kits to swap over to HID are becoming hard to get as they are now somewhat illegal, ie a gray area. I think in the future you are going to see this conversion become illegal.

That is sort of the reason I just want to do it. I'm not looking to replace the high beams with HID's, just the low beams. I would switch to some basic bulb replacements, but that just doesn't come close to what the real HID's actually do.

Check out this site: HID

A good friend of mine has a set from there on his 3000 GT VR-4. I'll probably end up buying a set for the race car too, as I hear they're pretty addicting-once you have 'em, you wont' ever want to drive without them.

Addictive is right. My wife's car (02 Acura TL-S) has real HID, the precise pattern and purity of light is great. Getting flashed by oncoming cars gets old, but people are getting used to it. I don't know that I would spend money to go HID instead of just better bulbs, but that's just my mind-set.

01 SPORT HID

This is something I want to do as well. I have upgraded my highs to 100 watt bulbs and heavier wiring, but I want more for those back country roads.

I have checked out the BMWs HID and they aim themselves every mili second or so with input from the suspension. I think that might be the key to not getting flashed by the oncoming traffic, way to complicated to add on though.

I think you cound get balasts from other oe applications via junkyard, wiring and relay from scratch, but finding the bulbs that fit in the OE dodge headlights might be tough to source. I an worried about aiming them too.

keep me posted on this, it would be a cool bomb

check out that site that I linked to earlier (http://www.misterjung.com), and then just buy his kit for the whole thing that fits our trucks. I'm about a week out of ordering mine I think, so I'll post up pictures if/when I get them.

Blinding fools

I can't say as I appreciate people uping the output of their lighting to the point where I'm blinded while they come from behind and pass me. Probably my fault for having mirrors designed for seeing as much as I can when trailering anything. Hope it's doing something for them cause it sure isn't better for the rest the world on the road.

Cheers,

Steve J.

OTRPU, when I get one of those behind me I use these cool power mirrors (Drivers side) to give them their own light back. If you do this make sure it's not one of Patrol types with red light options on the car, they don't like it. If your rear view mirror is not blocked by your trailer you can aim it without taking your attention from the road ahead. I have timed mine so I use 2 seconds out and 1 second down. Try it next time your home with the grocery getter behind the truck. You'll be surprised with the effect. Drive safe... ... ... Mike

I got the 9007 kit from an outfit called suvlights.com. Unfortunatelyt, they are not selling the conversion kits anymore. Instead, go with one of the kits from misterjung.com. They are well built, and priced competitively.

I've had them in for about 90,000 miles, and I love them. Get on a really dark section of two-lane highway, and you'll be glad you spent the extra money. Haven't had to replace a bulb yet...

My '03 will be getting them too (fogs and mains), when I find some time to install the kit!

I just thought that I'd post an update, and mention that I finally got my 7000K Misterjung.com kit installed.

The difference is absolutely amazing. I'd recommend Jung's kit to anybody, as it's well laid out and packaged professionally.

I'll throw some pics up for folks to see in the next couple days.

It's amazing to drive next to a car with standard halogens and see just how "yellow" they really look. Makes you almost think that standard headlights are this "dirty" color.

Just a bit of info, don't know how much farther it has gotten, but last I saw D. O. T. was going to pull approval for all hid lighting due to the "cut-off frequency" ( I think that is the correct term used ) of the light. Apparently it is not as safe for on-coming drivers as originally thought. One thing that may save them is the manufacturers lobby, they have a lot of money to throw around.

Funny when you think about it. Say they are outlawed so the manufaturer need to put regular light in place of the very expensive HID bulbs. And then the manufacturer drops the price of their vehicles and extends the saving onto the customer... ..... NOT. Seems like a good way for the Company to make more profit on their vehicles.

Good point Chipstien, I was thinking more of the lamp manufacturers not wanting to loose out on all the r&d they did and lost profits, but you hit that one right on the head!:D

A lot of my distributors (I own a Performance Shop), have cancelled even carrying HID conversion kits. The minute I heard that, I figured I'd just pick up a kit for the truck.

I got a kick out of driving around last night, next to BMW's and the like with HID's and they just looked at me funny.

Oh well, I smoked a 1st Generation Lightning, and he got ****** off, so I guess it all worked out.
