Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) rear axle?

i am having to replace my rear axle because of a cracked housing. i need to know what axles from what applications will bolt right in with no or little mods. can a 2wd axle fit? dana 80? what is the different from 10 bolt(dana 70?) to 12 bolt(dana 80?) if this is the case then why is there a 10 bolt spicer 80 listed as an application option. check out carparts.com & put in year make & model & look for rear axle assembly(housing). my truck is a 99 auto with 3. 5 ratio & L. S. even with a cracked housing i was able to yank a civilian H1 (real hummer) from hanging two tires over a creek bed to an inevidable turnover for more on this & me getting stuck check out the 4x4 forum

The two wheel drive housings have different shock mounts (angled). Do you have a 2500 or 3500? The cab/chassis housings are narrower. Best thing to do is to spec out you current housing with regards to overall width and distance from spring perch to backing plate. The D80 comes standard on the 2500 with manual trans, and that will bolt into a 2500 auto trans application.

why not repairable at a good 4X4 rear end shop ??

a good shop can cut old tube off and install new [and even thicker wall tubing if ya want]

it is the center housing that is getting smaller when the pinion is shimmed & retightened. it starts out tight & within a few turns by hand there is enough slack to be out of specks. it was set up last sat. real tight & the pinion seal started leaking today. i just put new r&p in it but they won't last long. does anyone think that finding a new center housing & having my tubes ect pressed on would be reasonable. if so were to find one. im going to call dynatrac & get some info.

Did you set up the rearend or have it done. It sounds more like the bearing wasn't all the way seated onto the pinion or the cup wasn't in the housing all the way. As far as putting your tubes into a differant housing, I would guess you could order a new housing from dodge cheaper. You should be able to find a complete assembled housing with axles, that needs from the backing plates out for much less than retubing with your parts.

the axle was set up with in a shop by a friend & a press was used. i asked the same thing but he said he used however many tons so i said ok. we set it up about ten times with different shims & no mater what it kept getting looser every time. there must be a crack in the housing that is making it get smaller therfore knocking the backlash or slack or whatever it is fall out of specs. i have found a complete rear end with a locker for $650 + shipping compared to a new housing & tubes for $1800. it is scary to trust that the axle will come in better shape than the on i have, but it is a chance i have to take. my dad has the same truck, even a 4x4 but it is open in the rear so i plan on switching the internals of mine to his as long as i don't tear mine up in the mean time.
