At 121K I'm ready to replace the brake shoes on our 1 Ton. Any shoes I should stay away from? Which brand shoes give the best braking & why?

If you get to much rear brakeing you will just slide the rear wheels or trip the antilock system unless you carry a load in the bed all the time. Can't mention brands but get a set of inexpensive rear shoes and they are going to handle any amount of braking needs. It takes a long time to wear any of them out. Most all rear shoes are of a pretty good quality, they are just marketed differently and sold at various prices. One factory I visited had a split in the assembly line going off to the right. These shoes got a paint job. That made them a premium shoe. ----Sam

If you want better braking go to EGR and get the larger rear brake slave cylinders. I sprung for them and the Kevlar Brake shoes (expensive) and the truck really stops quick. I don't know if it is a combination of both but the larger cylinders are cheap. I'd tr them alone first- stock rear brake shoes are cheap.

Sam does brakes

Sam is in the brake business. That's why his reply was short as the police are watching.....

ASAIK, He was the first to recommend using the 3500 cylinders in the 2500 trucks. Of course, a 3500 will come with the big cylinders.

The trick in brake life is to manaully adjust the rears, frequently.

When it's time for front brake pads, Sam will do you good on a set of premium Carbomet.
