TPS voltage at wot?

Hey all need some help. Im getting sick of the one tire fire on my 2002. Seems like even in 4x4 i cant get good traction with only the passenger rear wheel spinning. Relatively new to these trucks so am i right when i say these trucks came with a limited slip? Iv read about re stacking the clutches or adding a locker which is best,? I do tow a lot and its usualy heavy.
Secondly when im busting through snowdrifts or mud and i start spinning the whole truck will shake and buck, anyone run across this before.
Cheers folks

Not sure what this means.

Some do, some don't. Mine doesn't and I actually prefer it that way for winter driving. If i am in 2-wheel drive, I prefer to only have one tire break traction momentarily - not two. Keeps the truck going straight.

Are you using a good winter tire? Are you carrying some weight in the truck bed over the axle? I use Blizzak winter tires and my truck has excellent traction for snow and ice, especially in 4-wheel drive.

We don't get much snow here in Tennessee although the weather this week may prove me wrong. I got fed up with getting stuck on damp grass, the slightest bit of mud, and less than ideal off road conditions. I had an Eaton Truetrac installed in the rear differential and a Yukon positive traction (clutch pack type) in the front differential because to my knowledge Yukon makes or at the time made the ONLY posi tract differential for the Dana 60 front axle on our trucks that have the stupid 32 spline axles that NOBODY else uses. They work fine but I was really wanting an Eaton Truetrac for the front differential as well. Very happy and satisfied with both the Eaton and Yukon units. One of these days I need to add a 12,000 lb. winch.

What shape are your tires in?

For a rear tire to spin in 4wd then a front tire has to be spinning too, is that happening?

I do have bf goodrich ko2s on my truck with 75% tread give or take for the guys asking about tires, and a semi tire and rim strapped down in the box for weight

what are your driving conditions when spinning the tires. hy are you spinning them?
i've had excellent service from my k02's almost 60K miles from 285's, they are the best snow tires i've ever used.

let us know the conditions of the tires, and the operating conditions.

Typical of a coil spring front end, deep snow or sand will set it off. Back in the early 70's when Ford went to coil spring front end in the 1/2 tons you couldn't keep your guns in the rifle racks. The Ford 3/4 ton leaf spring trucks were/are smooth. With or without chains my '75 F-250 don't buck.

Even just snow on a parking lot will make only the rear passenger spin, never the drivers rear. And if i get stuck where i cant move anymore the rear passenger will have a hole dug and no hole on drivers

I just got through going through the rear on 2001 with lots of miles. Needed new axles as well as new spider kit. All were contributing to lots of slop that translated into what you described. Didn’t add a limited slip at this time as just wanted to get truck back in use for the winter. You also might look at your carrier bearing. That can look good at a glance, but be trash/sloppy under load.

Have you done any research into whether your truck had a limited-slip differential from the factory? As @petersonj said, not all these trucks had it. It was an option, not standard equipment. You can look up the factory build sheet by entering your VIN at [https://fcacommunity.force.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing]. You can also jack up the rear of the truck (wheels off the ground, transmission in Neutral - **Be safe!) and spin one rear wheel. If the other rear spins the same way it's limited-slip, if it spins opposite it's open diff. Also, regarding the 4wd, are you sure it's actually engaging?

Welcome aboard.

Ah, the infamous 2nd Gen wheel hop while spinning the tires. Lots of info over the years on it, seems that the pinion angle relative to the geometry of the stock rear suspension contributes heavily to it, and it really doesn't go away without installation of aftermarket traction bars.

The 'one tire fire' aka 'one wheel peel' could be your LSD clutch pack is worn out. Many OEMS stack the frictions and steels in the wrong order to limit effectiveness of the lockup for "noise, vibration, and harshness" issues that come from a properly functioning high strength LSD.

The fix was to take the clutch pack out and stack steel-friction-steel-friction-steel-friction etc vs how many OEMS did it, like "steel-friction-friction-friction-steel-steel-steel etc" but depending on the miles on your differential, there could be more going on.

Factoring your truck ever had LSD to begin with. Some didn't.

I wish a gear-type LSD was available for DANA 70s. I replaced the clutches, spiders gers, etc. on my truck and with the Belleville washers stacked in series ruined the rear tires in maybe 15k miles. I have now stacked the springs in parallel and the chirping tire condition has improved but still there. Used Amsoil Severe Gear and I added the DANA/Spicer LSD additive both times I had it apart. It's nice not having to rely on 4WD just to traverse wet grass, but if I keep wearing out tires I'll make it an open diff.
