I jack up one side of the axle as high as i can and let it sit for an hour, then jack the other side up and let it sit for an hour. Obviously this is time consuming, so bring a magazine or clean the garage :) I normally can get almost all of it, i end up putting in about 1/4 quart shy of the supposed axle fill amount.

Just pull off the cover and let it drain. Once most of it was out, I jacked the rear up in turn on each side to let the axle tubes drain. The worse part is carefully scraping off all the old sealer. It's a perfect opportunity to add a Mag-Hytec with a drain and an o-ring. :D

Looks like rhickman beat me by a millisecond!

dresslered got the last laugh i guess! No you don't have to pull the axles, though it may help get those extra couple of drops out. Hell while you're at it put quality seals in there instead of the crap DC uses.

All in all, drain as much as you can, what you can't don't worry about. Just remember, eventually the axle will have to be rebuilt, just like we're all going to die so is the axle. You have to ask yourself, is wasting thousands of dollars over the life of the inital build, worth the effort and time, to save 10k miles in the long run? Just a thought for those maintenance happy people that change oil every weekend among other things.

I'm one of those happy people, but i do it sensibly. If you want some tips on the change out PM me.

If you are going to go to the trouble of.....

putting in some quality seals... . pick up some hardened washers to go behind the factory axle nuts.

Don't set the bearings too loose... . I have ruined more seals by doing that. ;)
