   changed out my rear end fluid this wknd w/ amsoil 75w90, i had a whine @ about 63-73 before w/ mobil fluid in there... now when i changed over to amsoil i have it @ about 55-73... . i'm very confused how can changing my fliud worsen the sound? especially w/ amsoil... i first changed the fluid @ 3k and yes it was bad (milky grey in color) and a decent amount of shavings on the drain plug. 2nd time around i wanted to change to amsoil which occured @ 7k oil looked real good this time...

any thoughts on why i'm now hearing this whine earlier... i just don't understand... . i have the 3. 73 not sure if my sig says so. .

Not sure why, but thanks for posting! I was just going to switch to Amsoil myself. I've been having some rear end whine problems with my 04. 5. I was told that AMSOIL would really help it. . Maybe I'll wait and see what you found out!

You really thought Amsoil would cure a howling differential?

And you ask how did it worsen? Its because you continue to drive it without fixing it. Drive it some more and I bet it'll really howl.

You could spend weeks testing out different oils that may have a different effect on the existing howl, or; take it to your service manager and get the thing fixed the old fashioned way.

Seems like those 3. 73 AAMs have a propensity to howl.

Mine's Amsoiled and quiet...

I changed my diff oil for the first time at 13k and it was the dark grey, almost black, very little metal on the plug, no wear marks on the teeth of the gears. Changed to Amsoil 75-W90, noted no difference in noise. Front diff, same.

The DC rep drove my truck this week and she howled like a banshee at 65 MPH. It will be interesting to see what they come up with to fix it.

That's great, but how did the truck sound... :D

I didn't even have to go through that. The diesel mechanic at my dealership took it for a ride with me driving and said "ok, that's enough" and replaced it.

No way will switching to a different, or even superior, lube correct a bad differential... sorry to hear it, but not very likely to be Amsoil related...

They are going the dampened drive shaft route but there is no way that will fix that amount of noise. After they do that I will be pushing for a rear axle assembly.

Wow,

Sure seems like alot of bad AAM's out there! Figures, just when I get rid of my weak transmission (47RE) and get the CP-3 to hopefully rid myself of the VP-44 worries, something else crops up! It sure would be interesting to know what the % of AAM's are failing. Anybody noticed ANY trends? 10. 5" vs 11. 5"?... '03 vs. '04 vs. '04. 5? 4. 10's vs. 3. 73's ? etc. etc.

I suspect a case of "Ya gets what ya PAYS for"...

DC was pressuring vendors to reduce the costs of goods sold to them by something like 25% - looks like Dana refused and was dumped in favor of AAM - wonder how THEY managed to cut costs to meet DC's price demands... HMMMMmmmm... .

DC was putting the same pressure on Cummins as well - wonder how Cummins managed to profitably meet the DC price demand... . ;) :D

Not adding much oil in the first place.

Casey, you have one of the oldest 3rd gen there, how many miles before it (the truck) started howling? Dan

I have about 14,000 miles on the truck now. I first noticed the noise at around 8,000 and it has progressively worsened. It was probably there before that but wrote it off as normal. She really sings now at around 65 mph. My recent 2,000 mile round trip south towing our fiver really aggravated it. Apart from this axle problem this is one great truck. I just hope DC makes this right.

Had mine rebuilt, (new gears and all bearings) by dealer, quieter but still has some noise issues. The Dana in my '98 is approaching 100k and is still quieter. Will address this some more before warranty is out.
