From 1990-1993 what were the rear end ratios on these models?

On the early Cummins trucks, 1989-91. 5 +/- they used the Dana 70-2UA 3. 07 ratio. That is a unit specific model, not compatable with other axles or other axles with it. The rest were Dana 70 with 3. 54 or 4. 10 ratios. I'm sure others will chime in.

So if I was thinking of pulling a cattle trailer with near 12-13K pounds, I should stear clear of the early models? I should be looking for a '92-'93? Will the automatic stand up to pulling a cattle trailer with that weight, or should I set my sites on a 5 speed manual?

thanks,

Jim

Yeah, with that kind of weight the 3. 07's are going to be a bit high.

A manual and 3. 55's will handle that nicely. The auto and 4. 10's almost as well. IMO, get the auto as it an be beefed easily if so desired and if rebuilt correctly once its a do it and forget it deal. The manual is a bit more problematic and already may have the goody used out of it.

All depends on your wnats and needs. :)

Another thing to watch out for. The 93 3/4 truck with a stick had 3:07's as a optional gear from the factory. So check the rear axle ratio to be sure.

I don't think anyone here has seen one. But it is listed in the dealer sales material I have.

I wouldn't hesitate to climb under the truck to look for the axle tag, usually on a differential bolt. The last couple trucks I bought I took to a shop and had put on the rack so I could look them over closely. They assessed them for $35 and I used that to bargain down the price a bit.

I have towed in the mid 20Ks with 3. 54s and a 5speed. I really think the 4. 10s are useless, and only serve to suck fuel. The Getrags arent as bad as some make them out to be. The reason I dont still own my first CTD is because I didnt like the way the stock auto pulled a 10K box trailer up and down I-25. It is a couple grand to upgrade the auto, from what I've read. I can buy a lot of go fast goodies for the 5speed for that kind of coin. Just keep the oil level up and DONT LUG IT!!!! Under 1500rpm kills getrags, and most other light/ medium duty trannies behind the Super B.

Philip, I'd sure like to find a stick with 3. 07s in it.

Daniel I haven't seen one eather. But it is listed as a option in the manuals I have. That was 3/4 ton only. It wasn't a option for the dually's.
