2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission rear u joint

#@$%! I cannot get the u joint to come out. Removed the straps on the two sides which was easy since two of the bolts were loose already. Took out the retaining clips and tried to tap the caps out. That wasn't working so I started hitting it with a hammer, not directly, but with a socket. So that didn't work so I squirted some PB blaster on it and waited a while and banged some more. And that didn't work, I even tried a bigger hammer. ANy suggestions?

If they are tight and sized in the yoke, hitting one cap to push out the opposite cap is too much to move. Lay the yoke on a 4x4 and whack, I mean whack hard with a short handled 3 or 4 pound sledge hammer, the cross near where a zerk would be, with a heavy dull chisel,(I mean one about 1 1/4 inches in diameter and about 10" long) they will come out.

I'll give it another try tomorrow. I do have a short handle sledge, thats what I meant by using a bigger hammer. I don't want to remove the whole drive shaft I'd just like to do it under the truck. So if I can't get it tomorrow I'll just take it in and have them balance the driveshaft too. Have been getting a strange vibration and when I checked out the driveshaft 2 of the 4 ujoint bolts were loose, so I'm pretty sure thats were the vibration was.

If there is torque on the driveshaft (transmission in park or in gear on a hill or slight slope) that will cause joint to appear stuck in yoke.

Block wheels & put transmission in neutral. I had the same issue once (didn't know it) and the u-joint popped out & slammed me in the head.

Could of been ugly!!
