2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission rear wheel cyl upgrade?

jelag makes some points. However, it's because I love my family and want more safety that I've done the mod. The old braking system is not up to today's standards. Heck, Dodge has upgraded the brake system over the years, even going to a larger rear cylinder before they went to rear disk.

My one concern, in which I agree with jelag, is locking up the rear tires so I am gonna downsize to the 1Ton Dodge cylinder. It can be done without removing the shoes.

Lets face it, most people on this site are gearheads and making a better mouse trap is in our blood. In my case, the '95 definitely needed to be improved upon and it is much better from this upgrade without question.

putting the 1 1/8" wheel cylinders on the older trucks is just upgrading the truck to the same configuration the newer truck are. I upgraded the wheel cylinders in my 97 2500, but both of our 98 2500 came that way from the factory. No additional risk, just better brakes.

I am curious as to where the 3" brakes that Bmote is talking about.

The 3/4-1ton works for the shoes on the earlier models (1st gens) because the 3/4 used a 2 1/2" shoe and the 1ton used a 3" shoe, BUT they both used the same exact drum.

On the 2nd gens the 3/4 ton uses a 2 1/2" shoe BUT the 1ton uses a 3 1/2" Shoe AND a different drum.

From what I've read the 3 1/2" brakes are too big to fit the 3/4 ton rearends backing plate.

Can anyone clarify?

i did the upgrade when i installed the 80 dually in my '01 ...



with the antilocks it works flawlessly ...



much easier pedal ...



have the original front brakes still on at 150k ...



definitely a worthwhile 1 hour project ...



engineers are trying to accomplish the companies goals as cheaply as possible ...



ala killer dowel pin ... getrag 360 ... 98-02 liftpumps ... stamped steel cracking alternator brackets on the '03s ... etc ... etc



all design flaws on stock trucks ...
