This is my first posting so please bare with me. I seem to have a leak in my rear window. The dealership put what looks like dum-dum around the window. Looks like crap! What should be the proper way to repair window? Dealership will not replace. I thought due to the massive amount of torque that emits from my thundering Cummings that it might be overflexing the body breaking the window seal! (just a little humor)

Groundpounder,

I hate to tell you this, but it's probably your brake/load light leaking. This thing is infamous for leaking. The gasget is cheap and it's a simple do it yourself project to fix. Gooping up the rear window is inexcusable!!! Actually, I don't think that removing the rear window and replacing the gasget is that big of a deal. You probably should check with a local glass shop to make sure. It sounds like you should beat those dealer guys away from your truck with a big stick.

Hmmmm, I thought that's what they put those nifty little plastic trays behind the seat for. . to catch the water #ad
Seriously, though, mine leaks pretty bad, I just assumed it was the gasket around the window, never thought about the brake/load light.

My brake/load light leaked so bad I had water under the driver's side floor mat. It took a while to locate the leak. After I FINALY found it someone made a post to this forum about it. Coulda been sooner. Anyway, check the crazy thing before deciding on the window. It MIGHT be the window after all but the bet would be on the light.

My new 95 was getting a puddle on the carpet next to the driver's chair rear foot, near the door. I thought it was a leaking door seal, but the rubber was perfect. Took it back to the dealer, who had the "leak doctor" look at it; "rear window leak... easy, see this a lot". I couldnt believe the water was running behind all those interior panels and showing up waaaaay over there! It took him all of 8 minutes to fix it with dum-dum, with no mess, and never a leak since!

My rear wdindow leaked also. Fixed under warranty. Believe that Dodge jobbed it out to glass company to redo seal. But light seal sounds very possible.

My cab brake light was it and I used the putty tape you get at RV stores for installing RV windows, used to have a big puddle inside now its fixed

I've fixed a bunch of them, and only one- a 96 regular cab- had a leak @ the backglass. All the others were leaking @ the CHMSL/cargo light. I use a 1/4" wide by 1/8" thick foam tape with adhesive on one side only and stick it to the light itself. It will seal to the cab when tightened but will release when removing the light to service the bulbs.

As for the back glass, only the 95-97 Club Cabs had a rubber gasket set. 94-up regular cabs and all 98-up trucks have the backglass bonded to the cab with urethane adhesive. If the leak is minor and you've been living right, you can sometimes reseal them from inside the cab. Usually you have to cut the glass out and completely redo the installation- it's a PITA but not as bad as on a 88-up Chevy!

A new gasket from Dodge for the light is cheap and works good. It just takes a few minutes to install. I cleaned the surfaces with denatured alcohol before installing the gasket. It's been some time now and no leaks.

thanks guys. i have this problem as well. i will pick up a new gasket when i pick up the trans filter and fuel filter today.
